Many have waited a long time for Lyne to get back behind the camera, and the agency’s first order of business will be to help Lyne set up that film. Film Review: ‘Polina’

Film Review: ‘Polina’
One of the defining movie moments of the last 40 years — a sequence at once ridiculous, iconic, and enthralling — is the ballet-school audition climax of “Flashdance,” in which the aspiring dance superstar played by Jennifer Beals prances and struts and gyrates and, finally, break-dances to the synth-pop glory of Giorgio Moroder and Irene Cara, wowing the world of highbrow snoot and overthrowing it at the same time. “Polina,” co-directed by Valérie Müller and Angelin Preljocaj, turns the mythology of that sequence into a European art film — or, more precisely, stretches it out into a teasingly austere, deliberately paced movie about a young Russian ballerina’s progress from elegant classical drone to free-spirited something-or-other.

Polina (Anastasia Shevtsova) has grown up in a joyless land of oppression, nuclear power plants, and occupational dead ends, and it’s her family’s dream that she’ll use her talent as a dancer to ascend. Her father, Anton

Exclusive: Jennifer Beals Reveals Why 'Last Tycoon' Is Her 'Favorite' Role, Dishes on 'Epic' 'L Word' Revival
It was kismet for Jennifer Beals when The Last Tycoon came along.

The 53-year-old actress, best known for her roles in Flashdance and The L Word, plays the fierce and in-demand Hollywood star Margo Taft, who comes into the fray in the original Amazon series' third episode and proves a strong woman isn't to be toyed with.

As Margo, Beals showcases a woman -- who keeps her biracial identity a secret -- unafraid to demand what she's worth and even forces directors to show their private parts before she begins filming their movie.

Beals recently jumped on the phone with Et to discuss her exciting new role on the 1930s-set The Last Tycoon, which also stars Matt Bomer, Kelsey Grammer and Lily Collins, and offers an update on the long-awaited Showtime revival of The L Word.

Gorilla "Dances" to "Maniac" and Channels Flashdance and Jennifer Lopez

He's legit got moves, this gorilla! In 2011, a gorilla named Zola became a viral sensation due to a video of him breakdancing at the Calgary Zoo. Nowadays, he's chilling at the Dallas Zoo and is still dancing, as seen in a video of him splashing around in a swimming pool enrichment session off habitat, which was posted on the zoo's YouTube page earlier this week. Bob Hagh, a video producer for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, fixed the clip for them; He redubbed it with Michael Sembello's iconic 1983 song "Maniac," from the movie Flashdance, and posted the improved video on Twitter. Naturally, it's gone viral. Zola spins around and waves his arms,...

What an epic Lip Sync Battle!

To start off the showdown, Fallon, 42, hyped up the crowd with House of Pain’s 1992 smash “Jump Around.” Meanwhile, the retired Hall of Fame basketball player, 45, channeled Bobby Brown for a rendition of the New Edition band member’s 1988 hit “My Prerogative,” with a little help from Pitbull, who was the night’s musical act.

Black History Month: Spotlight on Octavia Spencer

by Steven Fenton

On February 26, 2012, Octavia Spencer won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her endearing performance as the feisty Minny Jackson in Tate Taylor’s The Help. With her win, Spencer joined an elite group, becoming just the sixth black actress to win an acting Oscar (and only the seventh overall, if you count Irene Cara’s Original Song win for Flashdance, since she also starred in the film). Prior to 2011, Spencer had worked steadily since the mid-90s, gaining a reputation as a warm and generous co-star and a beloved character actress. So her win in February 2012 felt like an authentic opportunity for the academy to recognize an industry favorite.

Spencer was an indomitable force in the 2011 awards season, snatching wins at the Critics Choice, SAG awards, Globe Globes, and BAFTA, and beating out a talented crop of women in sensational breakout performances, including: Melissa McCarthy (Bridesmaids

Nostalgia is a powerful thing, and when you’re nostalgic about a film that celebrates nostalgia you know you’re a) overly sentimental and b) getting old. Yes, we’re at that stage now when those classic movies we loved growing up in the 1980s are getting anniversary editions and this year sees, amongst others, Dirty Dancing getting dusted down and re-packaged in a special 30th anniversary collector’s edition Blu-ray.

It is very doubtful that anybody reading this will need a plot rundown but just in case you’re totally oblivious to the charms of romantic musicals it goes like this:

Great Job, Internet!: Read This: Notorious asshole Jon Peters thinks he’s the Trump of Hollywood

  • The AV Club
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, rich asshole Jon Peters went into great detail about his wealth and relished in his reputation as shamelessly money-hungry. When asked about parallels drawn between him and Donald Trump, he proudly told Hollywood Reporter, “I am the Trump of Hollywood.”

His life has boggled those in Hollywood for years. From his humble beginnings as Barbra Streisand’s hairdresser to launching the Batman and Superman movie franchises, Peters is a true rags-to-riches story, albeit without an ounce of humility. He’s so influential that he was credited as being the inspiration behind the films Shampoo and American Gigolo, and he’s had a hand in everything from Caddyshack to Flashdance. The Hollywood Reporter profile on him is not only full of great quotes from Peters about his love for smoking pot, but it also includes descriptions like this that perfectly set the scene

Christopher Nolan banned Jon Peters from Man Of Steel set

David Crow Jan 13, 2017

Controversial producer Jon Peters suggests he made tens of millions on Man of Steel while Christopher Nolan banned him from the set.

Jon Peters has had one of the most infamous and oddly-inspiring rises to power in Hollywood history. Once a hair-dresser bad boy who was supposedly the inspiration for Warren Beatty’s Shampoo, Peters somehow found himself as Barbara Streisand’s lover/producer on the A Star Is Born remake, and then a well-regarded producer who, along with Peter Guber, presided over classic 1980s blockbusters like Batman, Flashdance, and An American Werewolf In London. He also was the first guy to attempt to 'reboot' Superman before that jargon existed in the 1990s… mind you, his idea was to have Nicolas Cage with flowing locks to star in it while fighting a giant spider, but you know… he was still first.

Paramount, Jerry Bruckheimer Developing Science-Fiction Movie ‘Origin’

Paramount, Jerry Bruckheimer Developing Science-Fiction Movie ‘Origin’
Paramount Pictures is developing the science-fiction movie “Origin” with Jerry Bruckheimer producing and Joachim Ronning directing.

Ronning is in post-production on Disney’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man Tell No Tales,” which he co-directed with Espen Sandberg. Rønning will also write the script with his brother Andreas Rønning.

Paramount, which made a pre-emptive purchase of Ronning’s pitch, is keeping details of the plot under wraps. Bruckheimer, who has produced all five “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies, will produce “Origin” through his Paramount-based Jerry Bruckheimer Films company.

Bruckheimer began his career at Paramount with Don Simpson during the 1980s with “Beverly Hills Cop,” “Top Gun” and “Flashdance” and then spent nearly two decades at Disney with “Armageddon,” “The Rock,” “Con Air,” “Crimson Tide,” “National Treasure” and the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise with Johnny Depp. After a costly flop with Depp’s “The Lone Ranger,” Bruckeimer returned to Paramount

'Beverly Hills Cop': THR's 1984 Review

'Beverly Hills Cop': THR's 1984 Review
On Dec. 5, 1984, the Beverly Hills Cop franchise was born as the R-rated Eddie Murphy film hit theaters, becoming a $300 million-plus earner in its run. The Hollywood Reporter's original review is below.

Paramount can anticipate a healthy box-office arrest from its Beverly Hills Cop. Larcenously full of the high-tech production values one has come to expect from wunderkind producers Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer (Flashdance, Thief of Hearts), this lickety-split action comedy is distinguished by the wry, character-conscious direction of Martin Brest, who coaxes a silver-bullet performance from star Eddie Murphy that's practically criminal in its accuracy.

Murphy,...
