The change of the title to "Webster" caused a major rift between Alex Karras, his wife Susan Clark, and ABC. The show originally focused on an ensemble cast, but Emmanuel Lewis' character quickly became the primary focus.
Paramount Television agreed that the show would continue in first-run syndication if ABC cancelled it after fewer than one hundred shows. ABC dropped the show in 1987, after one hundred shows. Paramount had similar arrangements for Cheers (1982) and Family Ties (1982).
The show was originally to feature only George and Katherine, portraying a newly married celebrity couple attempting to settle into normal domestic life. After Emmanuel Lewis was signed to star in an undeveloped and undefined series for ABC, the network decided to combine the two.
