Arcadia of My Youth (1982)
[Harlock's plane crashes]
Phantom F. Harlock II: Damn, it's wrecked!
Toshirô Ôyama: What are you doing? Hey! Get out of there before it blows!
Phantom F. Harlock II: [fiddling with his gunsight] I've got get take this out with me at least...
Toshirô Ôyama: A Revi C-12D!
Phantom F. Harlock II: This is my eye. Whether in the Battle of Britain or the African Campaign, it's always been my eye.
Toshirô Ôyama: What... what are you going to do?
Phantom F. Harlock II: I can't run into a sanctuary. It is the way of the pirate to take responsibility for his actions.
Title card: At the end of their lives, all men look back and think that their youth was Arcadia.
Phantom F. Harlock I: The fuselage was heavy that day, with a full load of fuel. Unable to gain altitude, Arcadia's engine gasped terribly. The sound of the cylinders, seemingly out of breath, resembled the irregular beat of my aged heart. Arcadia and I flew as best as we could, seeking a ravine we could slip through; but the Owen Stanley Mountains looked down on Arcadia and I coldly, without stirring in the slightest.
[Harlock navigates snowfalls and canyons, but cannot find a way out of the Mountains]
Phantom F. Harlock I: Arcadia and I were beaten in battle in the sky for the first time in our lives. I turned back, swallowing my regret, when I chanced to look back...
[hears taunting laughter]
Phantom F. Harlock I: The mountain... the mountain was laughing.
Phantom F. Harlock I: In the belief that with Arcadia I was in a world where there was no such word as defeat, I kept flying. I kept ten minutes' worth of gasoline, and jettisoned the rest into the air, thus lightening the fuselage. I staked everything on those ten minutes.
Phantom F. Harlock I: My name is Phantom F. Harlock. This plane, with whom I have shared joys and sorrows, is the Arcadia of my youth. I kept flying, believing in myself. I have no regrets about my life. Dreams do not vanish, so long as people do not abandon them.
[about World War II]
Phantom F. Harlock II: It's Ragnarok, all right...
Toshirô Ôyama: But my battle still isn't over.
Toshirô Ôyama: How could they even start such a damned war?
Phantom F. Harlock II: Both of us feel it pointless, huh?
Toshirô Ôyama: Uh-huh... if I was going to do something, I'd rather work on a brighter future... like going to the moon, maybe.
Phantom F. Harlock II: I believe that one day the time will come when we too can fly there.
[Both gaze up at the moon]
[During an aerial attack. Harlock II readies his plane for battle, but Toshiro loiters around]
Phantom F. Harlock II: Toshiro! What's wrong? Get going!
Toshirô Ôyama: There's no place for me to go, anywhere, anymore. Go to Wiesbaden, from there you can escape to Switzerland. A powerful Allied Tank Corps is coming from the other side of that town. There's nowhere I can go now. I at least hoped I could go to Switzerland and continue my research, but...
[Harlock opens up a hidden compartment and pushes Toshiro in]
Phantom F. Harlock II: It's a bit cramped, but bear with it.
Toshirô Ôyama: My house was cramped too...
Phantom F. Harlock II: There's no bulletproof plating in there; if you get shot, don't hold it against me!
Toshirô Ôyama: I won't!
[after Harlock II's plane is ripped apart by spitfire]
Phantom F. Harlock II: Toshiro, you all right?
Toshirô Ôyama: Yeah! Thanks to that, I got a beautiful view now!
Phantom F. Harlock II: My eye... there isn't a single plane that has escaped once trapped within my Revi C-12D!
Phantom F. Harlock II: Toshiro, do you want to return to Japan?
Toshirô Ôyama: Naturally! What about you, Harlock?
Phantom F. Harlock II: Yes...
[loses himself in reflection]
Phantom F. Harlock II: [thinking] I want to return to Arcadia... Heiligenstadt, my home, whose forests and lakes are compared to that ancient Greek paradise... the place where my youth will forever run through green fields... the homeland of the Germanic pirate-knight Harlock clan. At the end of a journey, all my kinsmen think of their homeland. We hear the voice of Arcadia's pirate-knight spirit calling...
[Harlock II crashes his plane]
Phantom F. Harlock II: Toshiro, neutral Switzerland is on the other side of this river! Get out and run!
[There's no answer]
Phantom F. Harlock II: What's wrong, Toshiro? Don't just sit there! What are you doing?
[Harlock opens the compartment and discovers Toshiro had connected his body with the plane's wiring, and that he has been wounded]
Phantom F. Harlock II: [shocked] Toshiro, you... you held the severed wire with your body... that's why the stick was so soft... I'm sorry Toshiro I didn't realize...
Toshirô Ôyama: It's not like I'm dead. My hand's torn up, that's all.
Phantom F. Harlock II: [holding out his gunsight] Toshiro, take this and go home.
Toshirô Ôyama: That's...
Phantom F. Harlock II: My Revi C-12D. I'm giving it to you.
Toshirô Ôyama: But that's...
Phantom F. Harlock II: To a true man who I can believe in, to a true friend, I can give up my eye or even my heart.
Captain Harlock: Why did you act like a beggar?
Tochirô Ôyama: It's what you'd call a one-man revolt.
Captain Harlock: Revolt?
Tochirô Ôyama: That's right!
Captain Harlock: How can that be a revolt, when you don't have weapons, or anything?
Tochirô Ôyama: If there were weapons to be had, would you do it too?
Captain Harlock: Weapons? There aren't any, anywhere!
Tochirô Ôyama: [chuckles] In any world, there are loopholes, you know.
[produces a gun]
Triter: Now then... we have decided to send a volunteer dispatch of troops to Tokarga.
Captain Harlock: To Tokarga?
Triter: We want to give you the duty of transporting the troops.
Captain Harlock: A volunteer corps, for what purpose? For what reason must Earthmen go to Tokarga?
Triter: You pledged total loyalty to Earth didn't you? That's fine, so did I. Now you must kill either your mother, or a stray dog.
Captain Harlock: Earth is the mother, and Tokarga the dog, right?
Triter: Yes. As far as Illumidus is concerned, Tokarga has served its purpose.
Captain Harlock: Annihilate Tokarga? Liquidate it? Just who decides if that planet is useless? To WHOM is it useless? All life has worth! And yet you enlist Earthmen to take the duty of destroying Tokarga? Earthmen, by their own hands? You're scum!
Triter: Shut up! If we cooperate with Illumidas and send a volunteer corps to Tokarga, Earth's safety will be assured forever! You've called me scum, but would I NOT be scum if I let Earth be destroyed to save another planet?
[At dinner, Harlock sets his eyes on a young youth for the first time]
Captain Harlock: It's hard on you too, huh? I know how you feel inside. But right now, all we can do is shut up and eat. We've been beaten after all, but that does not mean we've been destroyed.
[the youth finishes his meal, and walks away. As he passes by Harlock, he deposits a bottle of sake]
Tochirô Ôyama: Don't die.
[walks away from a surprised Harlock]
Captain Harlock: And here I was feeling sorry for you...
Tochirô Ôyama: [examining Emeraldas's ship] Those are unusual burns...
Queen Emeraldas: I failed to cross the Prominence of the Streams of Fire, also known as the Stanley Witch of Space. It's a terrifying place, where in addition to tremendous thermal energy, there is also supergravity which attracts living energy to itself.
[Zoll and a squad of Tokargan soldiers approach Harlock, Tochiro and Emeraldas]
Captain Harlock: You bastard, how rotten are you? Do you desire so much the degradation of being an Illumidus dog?
La Mîmé: Stop it, Harlock! Zoll didn't come here to arrest you. He came to steal the Emeraldas, they're trying to return to Tokarga...
Zoll: Mime, stop it! It's nothing to tell them about!
La Mîmé: My planet was wiped out by Illumidus and returned to its primal state. I watched from the refugee ship as it vanished, and that moment of sadness is something I have never forgotten, not even for a single day. Zoll and his men now have those same feelings. If Zoll and his men escape, Tokarga will of course suffer reprisal; even so, they can't sit by and watch their homeworld die in silence. If they are to be destroyed, they want to be destroyed with their own people on Tokarga. They came to steal this ship as an escape ship. It is a fate that will someday befall Earth too. Here and now, let Zoll and his men go, without interference.
Captain Harlock: [to Zoll] Those were heartless words I said. Forgive me.
Zoll: [shot] Farewell, friend... I'm sorry that I couldn't carry out my promise...
Tochirô Ôyama: The spirit of Maya, who kept pleading to everyone to believe in tomorrow, is gone. The government now wants to exile us from Earth, forever! What will you do now, you who have begun walking the same path as Tokarga? Remember at least a little of what Maya said!
Captain Harlock: Is there anyone who will go with us under our flag?
[Two Earthmen run towards Harlock and salute him]
Tochirô Ôyama: He's gonna ram right into us!
Captain Harlock: Zeda's a man of courage. Such men existed on Earth in olden times.
Tochirô Ôyama: It's a head-on collision! No choice - I'm firing!
Captain Harlock: Tochiro, I command you to hold your fire!
[looking around the Arcadia]
Captain Harlock: You built this?
Tochirô Ôyama: Yes, with my inherited knowledge of technology. This ship is my alter-ego. Harlock, this is the ship that will achieve your dreams and mine.
Toshirô Ôyama: Someone's coming!
Phantom F. Harlock II: French Resistance, who have entered German territory. Don't worry, I'll get you away from them no matter what!
Phantom F. Harlock II: Are you Japanese?
Toshirô Ôyama: Yeah, I'm here with the Technical Exchange. I'm an optical machinery designer; my name's Toshiro Oyama.
Phantom F. Harlock II: I'm Phantom F. Harlock II.
Toshirô Ôyama: [holds up a book] Harlock? Then you're the Harlock who wrote this book?
Phantom F. Harlock II: That book was written by my father.
Toshirô Ôyama: I see...
[skims through the book]
Toshirô Ôyama: "Arcadia of My Youth"... only men can appreciate such feelings.
Phantom F. Harlock II: Something like that.
Phantom F. Harlock II: Tochiro, don't abandon your dreams. Live, no matter what...
[Harlock is hit]
Toshirô Ôyama: HARLOCK!
Phantom F. Harlock II: I'm glad to have met you at the end of this vain war. I wish we'd met in different times...
Toshirô Ôyama: HARLOCK, don't die! DON'T DIE! Harlock, as long as the bloodline of my family lives on, our friendship will not be forgotten! IT WON'T BE FORGOTTEN!
Zoll: I've been a dog... a dog begging for the lives of my people... a fighting dog in service to Illumidus! Those who stayed back home are clenching their teeth, believing in the day of revival! They're holding their breath under Illumidus believing we'll return to save them one day! When I close my eyes, I can still see my young brother and sister, still little, praying for the day I return... their clenched teeth, their prayers that I come back alive...
[kneels in front of Tochiro]
Zoll: I beg you, go to Tokarga!
[Tochiro breaks into tears]
Zoll: Thank you. You're the only man who's shed tears hearing what I have to say.
Mâya: Emeraldas, forgive me. I didn't want to see Harlock a slave. That's why I called to him to escape via the Voice of Free Arcadia. As a result, Zoll died, and you have a scar on your beautiful face that will last a lifetime, and many people were captured and wounded. All of it, coming from my broadcasts. I should have been executed.
Queen Emeraldas: That's not true. Even without your broadcasts, sooner or later the people of Earth, Zoll and I would have done this. Harlock, Tochiro and LaMime would surely have taken the same path.
[Harlock listens to a recording]
Mâya: You, who are setting out with the flag of freedom flying, goodbye, until the day you return. I believe that no matter how far away you may be, you will never forget Earth. No one can stop you setting out on your journey under your flag. Goodbye. But, it is because you are such a man, who has always believed in tomorrow, never losing dreams or hope, that I remember with pride the days when I talked with you. I pray that your future will be as you believe. Goodbye, my Harlock. Please live, no matter what. I can see, burning in your heart, the red flame of belief in the future. I can see the fire burning of a man who will never betray his friend. It's because you are such a man, that I love you. I will become one of those fires in your heart, I will become that fire, and I will burn forever... Harlock.
Zêda: Harlock! I have found you to be a true Earthman, who cannot simply be judged in terms of data. The same goes for Tochiro, and for Maya. I have long wished to duel with you, not as commander of the Earth Occupation Forces, but a warrior. Rest assured, I will give no quarter in this battle!
Queen Emeraldas: Harlock! Zeda deliberately led us to a place where we can easily escape! If we reverse course and accelerate immediately, the Illumidus fleet can't catch us!
Captain Harlock: This is the beginning... I don't want it said throughout history that I fled at the beginning. What do you think, Tochiro?
Tochirô Ôyama: I don't want to put to sea while showing my back to the enemy!
Queen Emeraldas: [smiles] From now on, those who run into you will be unfortunate!
Captain Harlock: Pirates have pirates' ways! Those are our ways! All hands to stations! Full speed, port and starboard! Prepare to board! We'll reverse course, and board the bastards' flagship!
Captain Harlock: The truth of creation that governs the universe... my friend Zoll, and his sister Mira, the last pure Tokargan female; are hereby trusted to your bosom. Farewell, truth; give Zoll and Mira eternal rest.
Tochirô Ôyama: Farewell, friends.
[the coffins carrying Zoll and Mira are deployed into space]
Captain Harlock: We will meet again, at the far place where the ring of time is linked. Goodbye Maya. Until I reach the end of my life in the Sea of Stars, I will never forget you.
Tochirô Ôyama: Are you ready, Harlock?
[Harlock is silent, so Emeraldas gives the signal, and Tochiro deploys Maya's coffin]
Captain Harlock: Sea of Stars, we now leave our precious loved ones in your hands, in the belief that righteousness rules over this sea...
Captain Harlock: We will not pray for anything. Nor will we seek help from anyone. Never again will we fight under another's flag. We will keep on fighting only for what we believe in, under only OUR flag, as long as we live! Under MY flag!
Title card: I live in freedom under my flag.
[Zeda's final words to Harlock]
Zêda: Harlock, when we meet in Hell, let us drink as friends. Until then, realize your dreams without dying! Live, and be certain to realize your dreams! Farewell!
[During World War I, a pilot is seen flying a biplane through a mountain range amidst a fierce thunderstorm]
Phantom F. Harlock I: My name is Phantom F. Harlock. At that time, I was flying amidst rolling thunder from Port Moresby, traversing New Guinea, heading for Rabaul, on New Britain Island. As an aerial explorer, conquering the sky throughout the world was the dream upon which I staked my life. It was the Owen Stanley Mountains that stood in my way; its highest peak was 5030 metres, the mountain that has come to be feared by men as the Stanley Witch.
Phantom F. Harlock I: My name is Phantom F. Harlock, and this plane is the flesh of my flesh, sharing my blood; the friend that shares my fate; the Arcadia of my Youth. When this plane, with whom I shared my youth, with whom I rode the skies, has ceased to fly, so too will my life cease.
Mâya: This is the Voice of Free Arcadia. The sun sets, and rises again. The future does not come to those who don't believe in it. All who believe have endured for long, and will someday meet up with you. Someday we will combine our forces and live the future with you. No matter how small a flame there may be, do not let it go out. Believe in our tomorrow...
Mâya: [on the radio] This is frequency 6050, using variable micro-current cycles... The sun which set yesterday will rise again this morning. And we believe that sun will rise again tomorrow...
Captain Harlock: That voice...
Mâya: We believe in our future. Hear me, those who try to live, those who can live, on Earth...
Captain Harlock: Maya...
Mâya: Though the ground was burnt and everything turned into ashes, we will revive again. The sky is still blue, the crashing waves from long ago are unchanged. This is Earth, our planet. This dream is in the hearts of people; so long as they do not abandon it, it will not fade away. For the sake of tomorrow, keep a song in your heart. For the sake of our future, let us stop our crying and stand on our ground firmly.
Mâya: [singing] Thought the night goes on, the sun will not die. At the end of the darkness, it will keep shining. Lift up your faces, friends, and look up at the dawn. Friends who still do not see, tomorrow will surely come. Within the frozen ground, the flower's secret life continues on. Friends, do not lose the seed of hope. Friends whose names I do not even know, tomorrow will surely come...
Phantom F. Harlock II: All fighters, regroup!
[looks around and sees no one at his side]
Phantom F. Harlock II: I'm the only one left... Revi C-12D, my eye... it's just us now.
Captain Harlock: The dream has come to an end... Earth is now the only place for Earthmen to live... This is our defeat... is it all over?
Zêda: This is the Illumidus Occupation Force. Follow these commands and land at Base 446. If you resist, we will destroy your ship at once!
Zoll: Captain Harlock, isn't it?
Zoll: Disarmament is being carried out here. Hand over your gun.
[Harlock draws his pistol... and hands it over]
Zoll: That was a violent landing you made; unavoidable, given the condition of the runway. But in addition you intended to make your ship inoperable.
Captain Harlock: That's right.
Captain Harlock: Have we met before?
Zoll: At the battle of the Charlemagne Star Cluster Sector, your ship blew a big hole in mine.
Captain Harlock: I see. Victory must feel good.
Zoll: It was a long battle, after all. Many times, I too thought I was dead. Your people were tough, especially your ship.
Captain Harlock: Thank you.
Captain Harlock: By the way, what's your name?
Zoll: Zoll of Tokarga.
Captain Harlock: Tokarga? You're a Tokargan? The people who fought Illumidus way back and lost?
Zoll: That's right.
Zêda: [analysing Harlock's data] A recipient of the Badge of Combat Heroism... such a man would not be without use.
[an apprehensive Zoll waits for Harlock's arrival]
Zêda: It would seem you took this Earthman for better than he was, Zoll...
[the clock strikes ten]
Captain Harlock: I have come.
Zoll: This is His Excellency Zeda, Supreme Commander of the Illumidus Earth Occupation Forces.
Captain Harlock: I am Harlock, captain of the Deathshadow. I have nothing more to say.
Murigson: Don't wisecrack, you whip cur!
[tries to punch Harlock, but his hand is seized in a deadlock]
Zêda: Let him go, Harlock.
Zêda: [holding Phantom F. Harlock's autobiography] If you had time to read books, you should have devised a means of victory. You can't defeat us with books!
Murigson: Since we occupied Earth, we have collected data on a great number of Earthmen. According to computer analysis, Earthmen adapt quickly to new circumstances. In other words, until yesterday they hated us as an enemy, and today they follow us wagging their tails!
Captain Harlock: Earthmen are not such cowards as that!
Murigson: Anyway, Harlock... the Supreme Commander has heard of your reputation and would not be unwilling to give you work, if you want it.
Captain Harlock: Not a chance!
Zêda: You are stubborn. Very well, then!
Murigson: When you receive your food coupon, get lost and stay lost! There's nothing more for you to do! You'll never fly again! Got that?
LaMime: [giving Harlock a food coupon] Don't lose your temper, eat while you can. Right now, Earth's provisions are nearly exhausted.
[Tochiro and Harlock are both strapped to a machine]
Zoll: The device we have placed in you is for simultaneous two-person analysis of the memory regions of the genes in your cells. It can completely analyze 3000 years of memory in one minute.
Captain Harlock: So what?
Tochirô Ôyama: Is this some kind of torture?
Zoll: Listen to me. You two have some genes in common...
[points to a monitor]
Zoll: Notice how those lines intermingle from time to time? Those portions that throw off sparks are the ones.
Captain Harlock: What is this leading up to?
Zoll: Your memories, in fact your genes, all the way from your distant ancestors, both have parts that are absolutely identical.
Captain Harlock: You, and...?
Tochirô Ôyama: Me?
Zoll: I've been acquiring data from ages concerning your genes. Strange data, at that. You both share identical memories, based on a common experience. I'm going to play those memories back.
Triter: [to Harlock] According to Zoll's report, your data analysis was perfectly clean, and there are no problems.
[Harlock and Tochiro exchange glances]
Triter: Harlock, we must once again have you pledge loyalty to Earth.
Captain Harlock: I've always fought with a will. But it's always depended on the state of the Earth at the time.
Zoll: What is it, LaMime? It's dangerous to come here!
LaMime: I know, but...
Zoll: But what?
LaMime: I overheard a top secret coded order to the Supreme Commander. Tokarga...
Zoll: What about Tokarga?
Captain Harlock: Emeraldas... let me hijack your ship. I wish to leave Earth.
Zoll: You are to present yourself to the office at ten o'clock.
[Harlock walks away]
Zoll: Hold it! Didn't you hear me? I thought I told you to present yourself at GHQ!
Captain Harlock: Ten o'clock is still two hours away. There's someplace I have to go first.
Zoll: To your family?
Captain Harlock: My parents are gone.
Zoll: You are to present yourself at ten o'clock.
Captain Harlock: I'll be back. Don't you trust my word?
Zoll: Watch yourself, there isn't much law and order around. If you die and don't come back, it'll be my fault.
Queen Emeraldas: I am Emeraldas, a free space trader. I'm a legitimately licensed trader. A free space trader, neither enemy or ally to anyone. Who are you?
Tochirô Ôyama: Tochiro... Tochiro Oyama, to be precise.
Queen Emeraldas: What do you want?
Tochirô Ôyama: I am looking for a friend.
Mâya: [on the radio] However great the suffering, think of it as a harbinger for making tomorrow's meeting even more beautiful, and please do not succumb to seductive despair. Do not forget the freshness of the dawn, or the wind; please remember that day when we ran hand in hand through that green field, overflowing with love...
Maya: Harlock... No! Don't come any closer! I'm glad you've come this far! Run, quickly!
Captain Harlock: You're telling me to leave, and abandon you?
[Harlock steps towards Maya]
Maya: No! You must stay away! Dying will accomplish nothing! If we live, we can meet again someday. The day will surely come when we see the sun and smile...
[Harlock keeps going]
Maya: Harlock! Stay away! Stay away, Harlock...
Queen Emeraldas: Harlock! Long time no see!
Captain Harlock: Has a man named Tochiro been here?
Tochirô Ôyama: Oh, you finally got here, huh?
Queen Emeraldas: The brutality of Murigson, who shot Maya and I, will not be forgotten! The baseness of Ttriter, who shot Zoll, will not be forgiven! You, who have no respect for peoples' lives, your cruelty will not be forgiven!
Triter: I... I was...
Captain Harlock: Don't make excuses! There is no act more cowardly than that!
Triter: [about Harlock's return] This may make you feel good, but it is very inconvenient for Earth. Earth is now choosing to maintain its cooperative relationship with Illumidus. Some idiots plot revolts and the like, but they will be suppressed. From now on, I want peace in the world. Dangerous elements like you do not fit Earth's policy. Thereofre, the government of Earth sentences you to eternal exile!
Tochirô Ôyama: Say what?
Captain Harlock: If you remain on Earth, we shall have to fight you.
Captain Harlock: Fight, against us?
Triter: You are enemies of Earth!
Captain Harlock: Enemies of Earth?
[the soldiers around lower their weapons and heads in shame]
Captain Harlock: All right. If you say you're exiling us, then we'll leave.
Tochirô Ôyama: Harlock!
Queen Emeraldas: That's right. Living does not mean clinging on to Earth and becoming filthy pigs.
Queen Emeraldas: If Tochiro hadn't repaired this ship, I would have had to discard it. Use it!
Tochirô Ôyama: Hold on! If you this ship, then no matter what excuse you give Emeraldas will lose her free trader license. Furthermore, as soon as Zoll takes off, Tokarga will be attacked; they won't wait till tomorrow. Let's go in another ship...
Tochirô Ôyama: Harlock, let's go to Tokarga in Zoll's place.
Tochirô Ôyama: I've been waiting... waiting for so long... acting like a beggar, I've been waiting... for the day when I... I would fly my ship! I've been searching for a worthy captain to entrust my ship...
Captain Harlock: Where... where is such a ship?
Tochirô Ôyama: [crying] It's there! IT'S THERE!
[Maya and Emeraldas are captured]
Triter: [through a broadcast, to Harlock] If you do not return to Earth and surrender, by 6:00 AM tomorrow Earth time, these people will be publicly executed!
Triter: Why not make a last plea to them to come back?
Queen Emeraldas: Neither she nor I would say those words, even if our mouths were torn open! And neither will Harlock and the others return.
Murgison: Anyway, they are cowards who only care for their own lives!
Queen Emeraldas: You people know nothing of real heroes. You know nothing of the true frightfulness of humans, you pathetic aliens!
Mira: Brother Zoll, I... I... did my best... it was hard, but... we all...
Queen Emeraldas: Maya, Harlock and his crew are returning to Earth. I hear he openly requested landing clearance from Zeda.
Mâya: If he returns to Earth, he will again experience hardship...
Queen Emeraldas: Even so, he is returning. Harlock is that kind of man. The next time Harlock and the others leave Earth, let's go with them. You've done all you can for Earth.
Maya: This is the Voice of Free Arcadia. I will report our new frequency using the variable micro-current cycles... 8390... 8390... This is the Voice of Free Arcadia. Let us go to the desert, bearing flowers. Let us go meet hope, bearing flowers.
[at Zoll's grave]
Captain Harlock: Zoll, I came back as I promised. But I was too late. Forgive me.
Bird: [crying] Brother Zoll, come back to Tokarga... I brought your sister Mira... Brother, Zoll, save us...
Captain Harlock: Zoll, I won't let your death be in vain. I swear it!
Murgison: You went to the trouble of coming back, just to say that to a dead man! Here, where this large army is waiting for you?
Triter: All I can say is you're an idiot!
Captain Harlock: Don't you understand? If you don't understand, then fine!
[looking at planet Tokarga]
LaMime: But, the Tokarga Zoll told me about was a lush green planet. This planet is completely different...
La Mîmé: Everything's been blown away... there isn't a single sign of life... Tokarga is finished...
Captain Harlock: What an atrocity...
[about the slaughtered Tokargan civilians]
Captain Harlock: They fought as long as the last of them had strength remaining...
Murigson: Harlock's returning? It can't be! All bases prepare to intercept!
Zêda: Hold it! Let them return to Earth, just as they are!
Murigson: Why sir? Let's shoot it down, it's only one ship!
Zêda: Just try shooting down one returning ship with Illumidus's combined forces - the Earthmen will simply stir up another insurrection!
Murigson: Commander, we really must intercept!
Zêda: They are seeking to land on their own initiative. Shooting down those who dare to return to Earth where a harsh fate awaits them, is something I won't do! They are true men, we must meet them as befits knights!
Captain Harlock: Tochiro, you all right?
Tochirô Ôyama: I'm fine, but the automatic sight is damaged. Without it, the relative angle... sight?
Captain Harlock: Zeda's central hull is undamaged...
Captain Harlock: Concentrate fire on the central part of the bridge!
Tochirô Ôyama: Got it! Damn, my hands are shaking...
Black-Suited Commander: The only flag that will fly in space is the Illumidus battle flag! Trample that skull flag!
Black-Suited Commander: The way you fight...!
Captain Harlock: Not by the rules, right! Exactly! That's the way a pirate fights!
[shoots the officer]
Captain Harlock: Never again come near any place where my flag flies!
Toshirô Ôyama: But why are you flying around in an Iron Cross plane?
Phantom F. Harlock II: It's what you might call paying rent.
Phantom F. Harlock II: Toshiro, are you of the samurai class?
Toshirô Ôyama: [taking a leak] My father's a farmer!
Captain Harlock: What is this?
Tochirô Ôyama: The ship, with which I have fulfilled the dream of my distant ancestor... the Arcadia!
Captain Harlock: Arcadia?
Tochirô Ôyama: No other name will serve for the ship we travel in.
Tochirô Ôyama: [at a monitor] The Illumidus fleet, a huge armada of 624 ships...
[the Arcadia follows Zeda's ship]
Tochirô Ôyama: Zeda is trying to draw us in the opposite direction, away from the area of space where the fleet is heading...
Captain Harlock: Tochiro, you all right?
Tochirô Ôyama: I, I'm still alive... but if he comes at us once more, who knows...?
Tochiro: Do you want to go to Maya?
Captain Harlock: If I go, she will be angry. She's that kind of person
Phantom F. Harlock II: [leading a squadron of fighters] Follow me! We'll land on the Autobahn for refueling!
Toshirô Ôyama: It's a shame your plane ended up like that.
Phantom F. Harlock II: Yeah. To think that I of all people would make such a blunder...
Toshirô Ôyama: The metal in the landing gear was faulty, and it broke. It's not your fault.
[Harlock throws a gunsight out of a plane, causing it to smash]
Toshirô Ôyama: Hey...! Oh, what a waste! It's doing things like this that mean this country won't endure!
Phantom F. Harlock II: Did you need that for something?
Toshirô Ôyama: Yeah. My work is the development of a new sight. I had one that I was carrying with great care, but it got wrecked thanks to your outrageous landing.
Phantom F. Harlock II: Sorry about that...
[after a major brawl with Illumidus officers]
Tochirô Ôyama: That was fun! My name's Tochiro! I'm getting out of here now!
Captain Harlock: Me too!
[Harlock II's aircraft gearstick doesn't respond well]
Phantom F. Harlock II: That's strange... Toshiro, is the elevator wire coming loose?
Toshirô Ôyama: It's fine...
Phantom F. Harlock II: It has a strange feel to it, one I've never experienced before...
[the Arcadia enters the Fire]
Tochirô Ôyama: The ship's thermal shielding surpasses that of the Esmeraldas, but according to what Esmeraldas said, these streams have the strange ability of drawing the essence of living beings to themselves.
[Harlock and Toshiro watch something in the sky]
Toshirô Ôyama: That's the world's first manned rocket.
[the rocket falls to Earth and crashes]
Phantom F. Harlock II: Looks like it ran out of fuel, too...
Mâya: [on the radio] This is the Voice of Free Arcadia. If you burn yourself out, only ashes will remain. A fire of living hope will never go out. Someday it will spread from person to person as a wildfire, and with their hands a new future is born. In order to protect that fire, no one laughs, even if you go far away tomorrow. People will believe that you will surely return...
[a shot interrupts the broadcast]
Captain Harlock: Did she get out?
Queen Emeraldas: I can envision her: the kind of person whom, within a gentle body that seems it may shatter when touched, holds fiery magma. That broadcast just now was a personal message to someone; she sent it aware of the danger...
Mâya: I haven't got long to live now, so let me see Harlock's ship on its passage...
Queen Emeraldas: [making a toast] Now, for Tokarga's future; for Zoll of Tokarga, a true hero; for the burning hearts of Harlock, Tochiro and LaMime!
Zêda: Rest assured, Harlock will come back! Start thinking about how to face him by then!
[examining a star map]
Tochirô Ôyama: If we go this way, we run smack into the Illumidus fleet!
Captain Harlock: Can we shake them off?
Tochirô Ôyama: Not without changing course. But the only change we can make is to break through the Prominence of the Streams of Fire.
Captain Harlock: The Stanley Witch of Space?
Captain Harlock: That's right. The five fire streams suspended between the double suns of Besberas. It's the most difficult passage in space... where the Esmeraldas was beaten.
Captain Harlock: Right! Just as my ancient ancestor dared, we too shall challenge the Stanley Witch of Space!
Old Tokargan Soldier: [to a band of Tokargan refugees] Listen to me, all of you! The last Tokargan female has just died! There isn't a single female left to bear our children. The Tokargan race is extinct. Do not forget, Harlock and his crew have fought for Tokarga at the cost of their lives...
Tochirô Ôyama: Mira...!
La Mîmé: Mira isn't the only one who died.
Captain Harlock: WHAT?
[Harlock and Tochiro discover only a Tokargan helmet and weapon]
La Mîmé: To cancel the life-essence attracting the ship, they all...
Tochirô Ôyama: Are you saying they jumped, into that river of flame...?
Mâya: This is the Voice of Free Arcadia... I am Maya. People of Earth, I wanted to keep calling to you always... I wanted to keep singing... but I... I cannot go on any longer... please, forgive me... this is the last of the Voice of Free Arcadia...
[slumps to the ground]
Captain Harlock: Maya!
[takes her in her arms]
Captain Harlock: Maya! It's all right! It's all right!
Mâya: Harlock... I truly believed that you would come back... that you were the kind of man... who could keep a promise even to a dead friend...
Captain Harlock: Let us go together to that Sea of Stars.
Mâya: I have been... dreaming for so long... of going to that Sea of Stars with you... like Heiligenstadt... our Arcadia... where we ran... together...
[closes her eyes... ]
Tochirô Ôyama: Maya!
Captain Harlock: Maya, Maya! I had so many things to tell you, so many things to ask you... Maya!
[Soldiers attempt to capture Zoll's coffin as it is taken aboard Harlock's ship]
Captain Harlock: Keep your hands off! That's a good friend of mine!
Zêda: Hold it, Harlock! I, too have pride. If you want to depart Earth in safety, you will have to go through me!
Captain Harlock: A duel?
Zêda: Yes. I shall choose the battlefield. As in times of old, the duel shall be one-on-one. I will not allow anyone to interfere.
[Murigson trains a blaster on Harlock]
Zêda: You disobeyed me. You took matters into your own hands, and drew your gun. Settle this yourself!
[Zeda walks away; Harlock shoots Murigson in the head]
Queen Emeraldas: Look, Harlock, at the red skull flag on my ship. This is Maya's blood. The pirates' emblem, painted with the blood that stained Maya's white dress. The ensign of blood, of all who seek freedom.
Tochirô Ôyama: Maya... she was Harlock's...?
Queen Emeraldas: Yes. Someone who did not chain down those she loved... someone you, too, would surely have loved.
Captain Harlock: A manual sight?
[Tochiro takes up a casket]
Tochirô Ôyama: It's in here!
Captain Harlock: In there?
Tochirô Ôyama: [opening the casket] Look!
Captain Harlock: That's...
Tochirô Ôyama: Yes... the sight your ancestor gave my ancestor!
Captain Harlock: This is the eye that tied our bloodlibnes together...
Tochirô Ôyama: Yes, OUR eye!
Tochirô Ôyama: Harlock, the gravity zone and the dimension wave around Arcadia are producing anomalies!
[looks through the damaged automatic sight]
Tochirô Ôyama: It looks all right... but using the machinery I can't tell the enemy's position!
Captain Harlock: It was the explosion of Zeda's ship, the explosion of his powerful engine warped this dimension of space! Which means... he did it deliberately to protect us! OKAY! Frontal breakthrough! We're boarding their flagship!
Triter: Citizens of Earth, the lawless ones have gone! Let us combine our strength with Illumidus, and once again build a paradise on Earth! We...
[Harlock switches off the broadcast]
Captain Harlock: Oh, you fools! Dance to your heart's content in that small world of yours! Our world is the expanse of space!
