Storyline

A family moves into a long-condemned New England household with a big pond out back that everybody loves to swim in. Soon, however, they find that the pond was the site of the execution- by-drowning of a witch three hundred years before, and she's back to revenge herself on anybody nearby, whether they're Catholic or not. Trivia

Superstition was extremely popular on pre-cert video in the UK on the VTC label in the early 1980s. So popular that it actually got a subsequent cinema release in 1984 under the title "The Witch" courtesy of Bordeaux Films International. This is one of the few times a video release was followed up by a theatrical release, rather than the other way around. It was then re-released by Stablecane under the title "The Witch" again on video shortly afterwards. See more »

Jolt after jolt after jolt after jolt!
5 April 2001 | by See all my reviews

This is a great film! I was expecting it to be typical boring haunted house tale, but it is much better than thought i would be. I don't know whether it was because I was tired but every 5 or 10 minutes something would make me jump. Things happen that you definitely do NOT expect. I also respected the fact that it wasn't cheesy in any way except for maybe the couple kissing in a car at the beginning, but that doesn't count because they aren't killed. The actors are good, in particular the police inspector. The father of the family who move in to the house is interesting in that he is not a hero, quite the opposite in fact. He doesn't want to get involved because he is frightened. Even when his wife goes into the basement to see whats happening, he stays sat on the bed looking at his hands. I thought that was a nice touch, showing that not everybody has it in them to defeat what they fear the most. The deaths are pretty much inventive as well employing microwaves, circular saws and huge spikes. All in all its a whole lot of genuinely scary fun!
