We all love us some Meryl Streep, don't we? Undeniably one of the finest actress that ever lived, she has dazzled us in dozens of films with her versatility and uncanny believability in all manner of genres. She really got our attention in the late '70s and '80s playing the soft and demure leading lady in films like The Deer Hunter, Sophie's Choice, and Out of Africa. We also love her as the take-no-prisoners girl boss that she has played in The Devil Wears Prada, Don't Look Up, and The Iron Lady. And sometimes, we just want to sit back and have fun with the master actor in romps like Mamma Mia! and Postcards From the Edge. But there is one particular role that exists in her filmography that is a most notable outlier from the three types that we're used to seeing Streep tackle listed above. In...

2023 was a miraculous year for German actress Sandra Huller. Not only did she receive critical acclaim for her riveting portrayal of a woman on trial for murdering her husband in France’s “Anatomy of a Fall,” she was also praised for her role as the wife of a Nazi commander in the United Kingdom’s German-language “The Zone of Interest.” Indeed, there was much interest in Huller and her two films. She was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress for “Anatomy.” And both “Anatomy” and “Zone” landed slots for Best Picture, as well as Best Director bids for Justine Triet and Jonathan Glazer, respectively.
As I was speaking to academy members ahead of last Sunday’s ceremony, I detected a surprisingly robust amount of support for Huller. And many of those who had voted for her mentioned her work in “The Zone of Interest.” It really did seem...

By delivering performances that add up to almost four and a half hours, the four acting Oscar winners of 2024 came within six minutes of setting a new academy record for highest single-year screen time average. Ultimately, they landed in fifth place with a mean of one hour, four minutes, and 57 seconds, thus becoming only the 12th winning quartet (and sixth in 10 years) to exceed 60 minutes.
Newly crowned Best Actor and Actress champs Cillian Murphy (“Oppenheimer”) and Emma Stone (“Poor Things”) are credited with a whopping 81% of their foursome’s screen time total, respectively clocking in at 1:53:10 and 1:37:19 and outpacing all of the 2024 nominees by at least four minutes. Supporting honorees Robert Downey Jr. (“Oppenheimer”) and Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Holdovers”) gave the fourth and sixth shortest nominated performances of the year, reaching individual screen times of 23:50 and 25:29.

Since 1940, the record for highest average screen time between same-year lead acting Oscar winners has been held by Robert Donat and Vivien Leigh (“Gone with the Wind”), whose mean of one hour, 54 minutes, and 43 seconds will likely never be surpassed. Nonetheless, there is a brand new pair in second place, as 2024 Best Actor and Actress champs Cillian Murphy (“Oppenheimer”) and Emma Stone (“Poor Things”) came within 10 minutes of dethroning the long-reigning duo. Indeed, both together and separately, their especially lengthy performances inspired several brushes with Oscars screen time history.
Murphy was specifically awarded for one hour, 53 minutes, and 10 seconds of acting work, while Stone clocked in slightly lower at one hour, 37 minutes, and 19 seconds. Understandably, each far outpaced all of their fellow nominees, respectively landing 27 and 22 minutes above their lineups’ averages. Their own average of one hour, 45 minutes, and 15 seconds makes them only the second pair of lead victors to exceed 100 minutes.

When we talk about the crème de la crème of Hollywood, Meryl Streep’s name is bound to pop up, and for good reason. With a career that’s been going strong since the disco era, she’s racked up more iconic roles than most actors dare dream of. But let’s cut to the chase and dive into the Meryl Streep treasure trove, ranking her classics from ‘yeah, that was pretty good’ to ‘holy moly, give that woman another Oscar already’. 1. The Academy Award, popularly known as the Oscars, is the most prestigious award that someone from within the film fraternity can win. It is every actor’s dream to etch their name in the annals of film history, a recognition of their mastery over the art form that takes a significant amount of time to refine. Over the years, several actors have won the award, thus setting themselves apart from the rest. In this article, we will take a look at five such actors whose Oscar records will not be broken anytime soon.
The film industry has seen the rise and fall of actors. While not everyone can make it big, those who have managed to do so have left their mark forever.
It is worth noting that an Oscar alone does not determine one’s talent, as it is merely a reward for the work that they put in.

By delivering performances that averaged out to 98 minutes in length, the five women who competed for the 2023 Best Actress Oscar achieved the category’s all-time highest screen time mean, shattering a record that had stood for over half a century. They will continue to hold that distinction until at least 2025, as the present lineup’s average falls below those of the last two groups. What’s more, this is the first year since 2020 that the lead actress contenders have less collective screen time than their male counterparts.
The 2024 Best Actress nominees have an average screen time of one hour, 14 minutes, and 33 seconds, or 52.18% of their respective films. Exactly 23 minutes and 24 seconds and 16.70 percentage points separate them from last year’s record-breaking group. In terms of actual time, their average is the 12th highest in the category’s 96-year history, while their percentage mean is the 32nd lowest.

There were movies about the Holocaust long before "Schindler's List." Superb movies. George Stevens' "The Diary of Anne Frank," Stanley Kramer's "Judgment at Nuremberg," Alan J. Pakula's "Sophie's Choice," and Paul Mazursky's "Enemies, a Love Story" (to name but a few) grappled with this staggeringly evil, carefully coordinated campaign of genocide so that moviegoers could, hopefully, comprehend how ordinary people could become bigoted, bloodthirsty monsters. The answers weren't comforting, but we couldn't move forward as a species without them.
Aside from the "how," there was another agonizing question that needed to be answered, one that was not as easy to dramatize: why didn't more people step up to stop this?
It doesn't take a great deal of research to realize that most good people were paralyzed by a mixture of cowardice and self-preservation. And while it is vital that we keep hammering home this observation for future generations,...

Some apotheosis of film culture has been reached with Freddy Got Fingered‘s addition to the Criterion Channel. Three years after we interviewed Tom Green about his consummate film maudit, it’s appearing on the service’s Razzie-centered program that also includes the now-admired likes of Cruising, Heaven’s Gate, Querelle, and Ishtar; the still-due likes of Under the Cherry Moon; and the more-contested Gigli, Swept Away, and Nicolas Cage-led Wicker Man. In all cases it’s an opportunity to reconsider one of the lamest, thin-gruel entities in modern culture.

It’s an old canard in the movie business: Never underestimate a Holocaust movie when it comes to Oscar attention. From Hungary’s Best Foreign Language winner “Son of Saul” (2016) and Oscar-winners “Judgment at Nuremberg” (1961), “Cabaret” (1973), “Sophie’s Choice” (1983), and “The Pianist” (2004) to Steven Spielberg’s Best Picture winner “Schindler’s List” (1994), many Holocaust subjects, especially shorts and documentary features, have won Oscars. Documentaries like “Anne Frank Remembered” won for 1995, “The Long Way Home” for 1997, “The Last Days” for 1998, and “Into the Arms of Strangers: Stories of the Kindertransport” for 2000, and more recently, the nonfiction short “The Lady in Number 6: Music Saved My Life” won for 2014 — just one week after its subject, Alice Herz-Sommer, the world’s oldest Holocaust survivor, passed away.

On Tuesday evening, Meryl Streep, Kevin Kline and Peter MacNicol hosted a special screening of Sophie’s Choice at New York’s Museum of Modern Art, presented by Lanvin, in celebration of the recent 40th anniversary of Alan J. Pakula’s seminal work.
“We’re a few of the only ones standing that made this film,” Streep said when introducing the movie alongside her co-stars. “There are a few still here: my hair and makeup artist, Jo. Roy Helland, and I believe my wardrobe woman, the great Alba Schipani. But the visionaries for Sophie’s Choice are not: the great writer William Styron, the beautiful soul that was Alan Pakula, and the master of light, Nestor Almendros, cinematographer, not here.”
MacNicol then shared a surprising anecdote about Almendros. “[He] was legally blind and wore eyeglasses that were as thick as Coke bottles,” the actor recalled. “I used to go up to the Thalia...

Like much better dressed students, Ethan Hawke, Cate Blanchett, Claire Danes, Holland Taylor and Sarita Choudhury filed into the basement theater at the Museum of Modern Art on Tuesday to honor an acting legend. It was the fortieth anniversary of “Sophie’s Choice,” the movie that helped launch Meryl Streep into the cinematic firmament. It was a role that she campaigned for, learned to speak note-perfect German and Polish for and, somehow, managed to completely transform into another person for, in this case a refuge who can’t escape the horrors of the Holocaust even as she tries to establish a new life for herself in Brooklyn.
And there Streep was, flanked by her co-stars Peter MacNicol and Kevin Kline, to reminisce about making the movie and to honor their late collaborators. It was a trio of fallen friends that included Alan J. Pakula, the film’s director, producer and writer,...

When Chris Evans Didn’t Name Scarlett Johansson As The Best-Looking Avenger Leaving The Latter Surprised (Photo Credit – IMDb)

Year after year, TV fans continue to be irked when the Golden Globes combine supporting performances from comedies, dramas, limited series and TV movies altogether. Looking through the list of past winners in the female category, you can clearly see there’s a bias toward rewarding dramatic roles over comedic ones. In fact, it’s been a whopping 13 years since a supporting actress from a comedy series prevailed: Jane Lynch (“Glee”). Is there a comedy curse at the Golden Globes? If so, it could finally end this year, as Gold Derby predicts Meryl Streep (“Only Murders in the Building”) will win the race for Best TV Supporting Actress on Sunday, January 7.

While Christmas tends to be the default setting for winter horror, 2008’s The Children makes a good argument for terror around the New Year. Many folks would expect leisure and fun after a busy Christmas. However, the chance for relaxation is out of the question in Tom Shankland’s movie. Something terrible has suddenly happened to the kids, and something even worse awaits their parents.
Spending New Year’s Eve with the ‘rents and their relatives is undesirable for most teenagers, but Casey (Hannah Tointon) will have definitely wished for more boring family time after her younger siblings and cousins turn on her and every other grownup nearby. No one past the age of puberty is safe here. As Casey and her closest kin gather at a remote house in the country — a decision that always proves to be as unwise as it is clichéd — The Children steadily reveals its unusual threat.

The motion picture academy has handed out Oscars for leading performances since the first ceremony in 1929. While the Best Actor prize is typically taken by a veteran, the Best Actress Oscar has tended to go to an ingenue. However, those age biases could be changing.
While a whopping 32 of the 96 Best Actress champs were in their 20s when they picked up their Oscars, the last five women to win were: 60-year-old Michelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”); 45-year old Jessica Chastain (“The Eyes of Tammy Faye”); double champ Frances McDormand, 45-year-old Olivia Colman (“The Favourite”) and 50-year-old Renee Zellweger (“Judy”). In the more than 80 years of Golden Globes ceremonies, you probably wouldn’t be surprised to learn that the person who holds the record for receiving the most nominations is Meryl Streep. After all, she’s Meryl! All 33 of her bids (and counting) are in the acting categories for her heralded work across both film and television. To date, eight of those citations resulted in wins: “Kramer vs. Kramer,” “The French Lieutenant’s Woman,” “Sophie’s Choice,” “Adaptation,” “Angels in America,” “The Devil Wears Prada,” “Julie & Julia” and “The Iron Lady.” Her most recent bid, for TV’s “Only Murders in the Building,” is still pending and will be announced on January 7, 2024.

Steven Spielberg had tackled serious subjects before, but none of his previous work had the power and artistic vision of “Schindler’s List,” which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. Based on the book by Thomas Keneally, “Schindler’s List” relates the true story of Nazi party member and war profiteer Oskar Schindler, who ended up saving 1,000 Jews from the Nazi death camps during World War II. Shot in black-and-white-save for a little girl wearig red coat- ‘Schindler’s List” is often a difficult watch, but it’s message of “Never Forget” is particularly relevant today with the rise of anti-Semitism and the white power movement. The epic stars Liam Neeson as Schindler, Ben Kingsley as the Jewish manager of Schindler’s factor and Ralph Fiennes, terrifying as a ruthless Nazi commandant Amon Goth.
The reviews were laudatory and despite its length — 3 hours 15 minutes — “Schindler’s List” made over $322 million worldwide. Nominated for 12 Oscars...

In 2000 – merely two years after she scored her first Golden Globe nomination for her supporting turn in “Boogie Nights” – Julianne Moore earned concurrent lead notices from the same organization for “The End of the Affair” (drama) and “An Ideal Husband” (comedy/musical). That instance of dual recognition made her the 16th woman to have competed for all three possible film acting Golden Globes, joining the likes of Jane Fonda, Shirley MacLaine, and Emma Thompson.
Now, two decades deeper into her career, she just landed another Best Film Supporting Actress bid for “May December,” which makes her only the third performer with at least three mentions in each film Golden Globe category.
With this new film nomination, Moore has three of each kind. The 63-year-old’s sophomore supporting notice came in 2010 for “A Single Man,” while her remaining lead bids were for the comedies “The Kids Are All Right” (2011) and “Maps to the Stars...

It’s impossible to imagine “The Devil Wears Prada” without Meryl Streep’s icy, Oscar-nominated performance as Miranda Priestly, but it turns out there was initial resistance to casting the acting icon in the 2006 classic. During a recent appearance on the “Hollywood Gold” podcast, producer Wendy Finerman revealed Streep was almost passed over for the role because some people thought “she has never been funny a day in her life.”
“Meryl, people thought we were crazy,” Finerman said. “I mean, I had people call me up and say, ‘Are you out of your mind? She’s never been funny a day in her life.’”
“She has been funny and they were wrong,” the producer said, calling out Streep’s comedy work in films such as “Death Becomes Her.” “But this was clearly a different kind of world for her.”

It’s hard to imagine anyone other than Meryl Streep playing the iconic Miranda Priestly in 2006’s The Devil Wears Prada.
However, producer Wendy Finerman recently said on the Hollywood Gold podcast that the Oscar-winning actress was nearly passed over for the role since someone working in the production thought “she has never been funny a day in her life.”
“And Meryl, people thought we were crazy, Finerman told host Daniela Taplin Lundberg. “I mean, I had people call me up and say, ‘Are you out of your mind? She’s never been funny a day in her life.'”

A lucky 13 performers have won both Oscars for acting. That is one hell of an exclusive club that even the likes of four-time Best Actress champion Katharine Hepburn and triple Best Actor victor Daniel Day-Lewis didn’t manage to join. Here’s the breakdown of thespians who taken home both lead and supporting Academy Awards in order of their achievement:
Helen Hayes won Best Actress in 1932 for “The Sin of Madelon Claudet.” She won Best Supporting Actress in 1971 for “Airport.” Hayes, who was the first performer to pull off this double feature, had the longest time between wins.
Jack Lemmon won for his supporting turn in “Mister Roberts” in 1956 before he took home Best Actor in 1974 for “Save the Tiger.”
Ingrid Bergman won Best Actress in 1945 for “Gaslight” and again in 1957 for “Anastasia” before she took home a supporting award in 1975 for “Murder on the Orient Express.”

'80s retro is popular right now, and chances are when people remember the great films of the decade, they are thinking of movies from 1982. In that magical year, the stars aligned and Hollywood seemed to create smash hit after smash hit. 1982 made not just the best movies of the decade, but some of the most enduring classics of all time.
The roster of amazing features from 1982 is so extensive that Oscar-winners like Gandhi, Das Boot, Quest for Fire, Sophie's Choice, and An Officer and a Gentleman won't fit on this list. Drama may have run the table at the Academy Awards that year, but sci-fi, action, and comedy dominated the pop culture, proving that 1982 was a truly great year for cinema.
Blade Runner Transformed the Sci-Fi Genre

Trump appeared in court for his civil fraud trial once again this week but, at this point, Sarah Silverman thinks prosecutors are “wasting time” by continuing to ask about the disgraced ex-president’s financial documents, instead of trying to get to the bottom of certain scandalous rumors.
To kick off her stint guest hosting “The Daily Show,” Silverman immediately mocked Trump’s latest courtroom appearance, which was reported to be chaotic enough that the judge told Trump’s lawyers to rein him in. But, Silverman cut him some slack on that, joking that, with so many trials to keep track of, “of course Trump isn’t focused.”
Her bigger concern was that lawyers aren’t taking full advantage of the fact that Trump is obligated to tell the truth while on the stand.

Despite being a bestseller, Donna Tartt's novel "The Secret History" has faced numerous failed attempts at adaptation to film due to various reasons. Hollywood legends Alan J. Pakula and Joan Didion were initially involved in the first attempt at adaptation but faced obstacles and eventually, the project was shelved. Gwyneth and Jake Paltrow and author Bret Easton Ellis also tried to bring "The Secret History" to the screen, but unfortunate events and difficulties in finding a network for the adaptation prevented its realization.
Though Donna Tartt's novel is a bestseller, The Secret History has yet to be adapted to the screen after a handful of failed attempts to bring her book to life. Meryl Streep is one of only a few actors who’ve managed to win multiple Oscars. But she considered her third Oscar win particularly special, as it showed her she was still passionate about the awards season.
What did Meryl Streep win her last Oscar for Meryl Streep | Franco Origlia/Getty Images
Streep scored her first two Oscars fairly early in her career. She won a Best Supporting Actress award for her role in Kramer vs. Kramer. A few years later would see her win her second Oscar, and her first Best Actress award, for Sophie’s Choice. She’d be nominated for an Oscar several times afterwards. But it wasn’t until 2012 that she picked up another Best Actress Oscar for The Iron Lady. The historical biopic saw Streep portray the first ever female British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.
It was an exciting win for Streep, who admittedly still enjoyed winning the prize.

Movies with ethical dilemmas offer captivating stories and thought-provoking moral quandaries, challenging both the characters and the audience's decision-making. Films like Sicario, Watchmen, and Sophie's Choice present complex choices, such as compromising morals for the greater good or making impossible decisions in dire circumstances. These movies showcase the moral grey areas and tough positions the characters face, leaving viewers pondering what they would do in similar situations.
Movies with ethical dilemmas or moral decisions make for some of the most compelling stories. Almost every film sees the protagonist having to overcome tough choices, and then possibly having to deal with the aftermath and the consequences of those choices too. But some movies with ethical dilemmas do it better than others, and some choices pose fascinating moral quandaries that would leave even the biggest puritans and samaritans scratching their heads.

Ask buyers and sellers at the Toronto Film Festival what they expect for the festival acquisitions marketplace that opens Thursday, and they’ll say either boom or bust. Even though there are almost 50 available titles here.
The uncertainty that twin Hollywood strikes has wrought brings uncertainty to what, on paper, should be the most robust Toronto in a long time. There will be far fewer stars on display; many backers have decided not to apply for SAG-AFTRA Interim Agreements, because it means turning off the streamers that have been the most prolific buyers of festival films for years. Witnessing an actor adeptly shift between comedy and drama genres is a true audience delight, especially when that actor is closely associated with one particular style. Navigating the comedy domain can be challenging for dramatic actors due to its intricate demands on timing. Comedic performers must comprehend the humor of a situation, while deliberately playing against it, to present a genuine portrayal and nail the joke. While live stage performances benefit from immediate audience reactions, on-screen actors encounter a tougher challenge, lacking the energy from the audience.

While those trophy stats matter to us nerdy awards pundits, let’s be honest: the average Academy Awards viewer probably cared more about what she was wearing on each of those nights.

When cinephiles debate the greatest acting performances, very rarely are voice-acting performances mentioned among live-action roles. Daniel Day-Lewis and Meryl Streep earn cinema's highest accolades for films such as There Will Be Blood and Sophie's Choice, yet Robin Williams' performance in Aladdin or Jeremy Irons' performance in The Lion King garner significantly less prestige.
Actors such as Mel Blanc and Sterling Holloway became foundational members of pop culture as a result of lending their vocal talents to animated movies. Brilliant voice-acting performances have proven to be every bit as memorable as the most distinguished live-action performances.
