Amateur, local underdog boxer Rocky Balboa is awarded a title shot against the World Champion, Apollo Creed. But it’s really a lot, lot more than that.

“You’ve never seen Rocky!?”

No.

“But didn’t you study film at University? How can you never have seen Rocky? I mean, everyone’s seen Rocky.”

I haven’t.

“What about Rocky II? Have you seen that? You haven’t seen that either!? I guess you haven’t seen Rocky III, IV, V or Balboa then?”

No. Have you seen L’Atalante?

“What’s Lattalong?”

Sly Stallone Set to Produce Broadway Styled Rocky Musical

21 November 2011 | The Daily BLAM! | See recent The Daily BLAM! news »

The Expendables star is prepping to for the return of the character that made him famous: heavy weight boxer Rocky Balboa. But instead of a film sequel, this time around fans of the Italian Stallion will be treated to a singing and dancing spectacle. Rocky is a boxing saga of popular films all written by and starring Sylvester Stallone, who plays the character Rocky Balboa. The films is the series are Rocky (1976) -- which to this day stands as the most critically acclaimed of the franchise, Rocky II (1979), Rocky III (1982), Rocky IV (1985), Rocky V (1990) and newly released Rocky Balboa (2006). DVD Review: 'The Escape Artist' (re-release)

7 November 2011 5:00 AM, PST | CineVue | See recent CineVue news »

★★★★☆ The Escape Artist (1982) is another title re-released this week from Francis Ford Copolla's Zoetrope production company. Directed by cinematographer Caleb Deschanel, the film is yet another of Zoetrope's casualties that failed to find an audience at its theatrical release, despite some initially positive critical reviews. Given that it was pitted alongside the likes of Rocky III and Annie, it's easy to look back and see why the film had a hard time which is a shame because The Escape Artist is a charming B-movie that deserves some attention on DVD rather than being forgotten altogether.

Discuss: Songs That Have Been Ruined or Overshadowed by Movie Montages

13 October 2011 11:30 AM, PDT | Movies.com | See recent Movies.com news »

The movie montage — particularly in the 1980s — wouldn't be complete without a song to set the mood. Unfortunately for the band or singer, their tune is often ruined or overshadowed thanks to the screen images associated with it that are hard to get out of our heads. Think back to Survivor's "Eye of the Tiger," which was used as the theme song in Rocky III. It sat at the number one spot on the Billboard charts for weeks when the movie was released. When you think of Survivor you think of Rocky and there's really no way to separate them in our collective memory. The same goes for Footloose and other movies, which Rue the Day has shared their thoughts about. Meanwhile, check out these songs below and try not to think about Kevin Bacon or Carl...

Please love thy neighbour in the cinema

7 October 2011 4:21 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Cinemagoers have grown to hate each other, but there's nothing quite like the shared experience of laughing, sobbing or throwing popcorn at the screen with a bunch of strangers

For the last few weeks, film lovers have been saluting the memory of the Scala cinema, that late, great London grindhouse. Under the banner Scala Forever, venues in the capital have hosted as many cult curios, double-bills and all-night zombie marathons as any sane person could stand. Misty eyes have rightly followed.

But the tributes also reminded me that the allure of the place wasn't just about the films. However great they were (and they were), they alone weren't what elevated it from just another funny-smelling old picture palace with a disobliging boiler. Half the magic was the audience.

Stumbling in from skanky King's Cross, the atmosphere that was the Scala's hallmark could never have fermented without the unruly presence of »

1) “Stone ColdSteve Austin

Our winner has to be “Stone ColdSteve Austin. Stone Cold has fought onto our screens many times over the years. Being the only action hero on this list even to be nominated for a Teen Choice. We have seen Stone Cold kick butt from The Longest Yard right through to Hunt To Kill, The Stranger and now Stone Cold’s newest movie; Born To Fight, and with yet more films from Austin coming in the very near future we think he’s the biggest wrestler-turned-action hero going.

Top 10 Wrestlers on Film!

(An article from our archives for your pleasure today)

Wrestling involves a great degree of acting, so it comes as no surprise that a number of wrestlers have attempted to make it in the movies over the years. With the formation of the WWE film division a few years ago WWE chairman Vince McMahon is determined to crack the big screen as well as dominating the small screen. Since the Hollywood success of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, a number of top wrestling stars have tried to follow in his footsteps and this shows no signs of letting up anytime soon with John Cena working with Die Hard 2 director Renny Harlin on the upcoming 12 Rounds, with no doubt countless other wrestler starring vehicles to follow.

Jerry Bruckheimer and The Rock like wrestling in the 80s

24 August 2011 9:10 PM, PDT | Corona's Coming Attractions | See recent Corona's Coming Attractions news »

When CSI super-producer Jerry Bruckheimer sells a pilot to a network, it's news. When said pilot will be executive produced by the man formerly called The Rock, it's bigger news.

When said pilot is a drama set in the golden 1980s era of professional wrestling, the ghost of Randy "Macho Man" Savage smiles down from Heaven.

The untitled pilot was just sold to NBC/Universal and will have its script written by Spartacus: Gods of the Arena writers Brent Fletcher and Seamus Kevin Fahey. Both Bruckheimer and Dwayne Johnson (aka The Rock) are executive producers.

It's unlikely that this show will draw on the actual history of professional wrestling at that time. Back then, Vince McMahon's World Wrestling Federation (yup, the old school WWF acronym was in use back then) was emerging as a major player in pro wrasslin' thanks to an appearance by Hulk Hogan in Rocky III »
