'A Christmas Story': 11 things you may not know about the holiday classic

25 December 2011 10:32 AM, PST | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

TBS is in the midst of its annual 24-hour marathon of "A Christmas Story," the 1983 movie about a young boy's (Peter Billingsley) quest for a Bb gun that has become as much a part of the season as "It's a Wonderful Life."

But did you know that Jack Nicholson was considered for the role of Ralphie's father? So says TBS, which says Nicholson was offered the role and he was interested. The movie's producers became concerned about what they might have to pay Nicholson, however, and went with Darren McGavin instead.

Here are some other little- to well-known facts about "A Christmas Story."

- Author Jean Shepherd, who narrates the movie and whose book "In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash" is the basis for the film, also has a cameo. He's the annoyed man in the department store who tells Ralphie and Randy the line to see Santa starts back there. »

His family and friends are devastated. He was deeply loved by all who knew him and will be missed every day." In Bob Clark's Porky's, perhaps the sleeper hit of 1982, Knight played handsome bad boy Tommy Turner, the type of man that today would be labeled either a sex addict or a sex offender (if caught). Back then, Tommy was just a regular guy, either thinking of sex or dreaming about it. Knight's Tommy is particularly memorable because while showing his dick through a hole in the girl's bathroom wall, »

Kim Cattrall: You can take the girl out of Liverpool… | Interview

24 June 2011 4:06 PM, PDT | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

Sex And The City made Kim Cattrall a star, but when it ended she couldn't wait to chuck out the Louboutins. She talks to Hadley Freeman about money, men and being mates with Steven Gerrard

As chance would have it, a few days before I was scheduled to interview Kim Cattrall, I spotted her former Sex And The City co-star Sarah Jessica Parker coming out of a restaurant in downtown New York. But instead of feeling like one of those magical Manhattan coincidences that generally happen only on Sex And The City, it looked like an ominous portent.

Parker is now nigh on unrecognisable from her youthful film career and the early (and best) days of the long-running show, having attained the seemingly de rigueur body shape for actresses – one that has been pummelled into a permanent apology for being a woman. Surrounded by bellowing paparazzi, she looked thin and guarded and miserable. »

An aging porn star befriends a star-struck fan in this poignant comedy from director Keith Bearden, in theaters Friday

Meet Monica Velour is a very sweet natured comedy about an aging porn star and her biggest fan, a seventeen year old nerd with a nostalgia fetish. Kim Cattrall plays Monica, a beautiful centerfold who headlined a number of off-the-wall adult films in the late seventies and early eighties. She has since fallen on hard times, resorting to ridicule at the local strip club where she dances to hoots and hollers of, "Is she wearing depends?" Tobe (Dustin Ingram), who has been a collector of Monica Velour VHS tapes, posters, and magazines throughout the years, decides to pay the hopeless and desolate Velour a visit while on a road trip to sell his prized Hot Dog vending truck. After an initial bumpy meeting, these two lost souls slowly, but surely, become friends, »

Fact: Howard Stern has been trying to remake Bob Clark's '80s teen sex classic Porky's for years. Lesser known fact: A Porky's sequel shot in 2009 by cult director Brian Trenchard-Smith (Stunt Rock, BMX Bandits), designed to possibly never see the light of day, has spawned a strange lawsuit that's currently screwing up Stern's plans. So why exactly is it that we've never heard of Porky's: The College Years (Aka Pimpin' Pee Wee)? »

When it Comes to Gays, Teen Sex Comedies Are Growing Up

19 January 2011 6:49 AM, PST | The Backlot | See recent The Backlot news »

There’s a theory that you can tell more about a society from its “low-brow” pop culture than you can from its high art. If that’s true, there’s not too much that’s more low-brow than the teen sex comedy, movies which are usually celebrations of male promiscuity and debauchery – often with a vague or bittersweet moral tacked on at the end.
