Yes, this movie sucks. Pretty badly too. But a weighted average of 3.2. Is this film really as bad a Sorority House Massacre II. I think not. The lead actress alone deserves at least a 5, and it's the songs that suck more than the singing. Anyway, I gave it a 10 just to try and raise it above a 3.2. I've spent hours trying to find a movie with a lower weighted average and haven't been able to yet.
Though I prefer to stay away from sequels, because as a rule they are almost
always not even half the film of the original. But this is one of those rare
exceptions, where it's twice the film, and here most tend knock it more than
praise it. What's a matter, not enough trashy gimmicks like sex and gore to
go around? Geez folks lighten up! This takes me back to the "Welcome Back
Perhaps I made the mistake of seeing this one first in theaters as a small boy, before I saw the original?... I don't know... Anyhow, the soundtrack's far superior to the original, w/ "Coooolll Rider" and the "Mistress for all Seasons" tune. IMHO motorbikes are far cooler than cars. High testosterone powered bikers are far cooler than a bunch of pansy mamma's boys as the first film focused on. Pfeifer's best work is Ms. Zanone and even one-hit-wonder actor Adrian Zmed is classic as her jerky boyfriend... So I ask you again, what's so terribly bad about this film?
Growing up, you're almost "taught" to love the movie "Grease", which is
probably why "Grease 2" bombed so bad. But, to be honest, although it has
it's good bits, "Grease" get's boring very quickly - I couldn't stand the
cheerleading scene and it is very cheesy. But Stockard Channing and John
Travolta were probably the only good things about this movie; and 'You're
The One That I Want' is pretty catchy, too.
What I can't understand, is why people can't stand Grease 2, and they haven't even seen it. Being a big fan of sequels, I think that it's harsh to label them 'pathetic' without viewing them. I can think of 3 sequels right now that are better or as good as the originals - Scream 2, Return To Oz and Batman Returns, and I must say, Grease 2 also fits in there.
Michelle Pfieffer is nothing short of brilliant as her role of Stephanie Zinone - the hot chick of the school who's been sought after by 'cute' nerdy boy, Michael Carrington (fairly weak Maxwell Caulfield) She has the best lines (like in that Hamburger restaurant) and to my surprise, she can actually sing. Everyone who's seen it says that "Cool Rider" is the BEST song on this movie - and it is!
(Superman II's) Maureen Beefy, (Judy Garland's daughter) Lorna Luft, and (Grease's) Didi Conn also feature here, and give notable performances. Cast originals Eve Arden, Dody Goodman and Coach Calhoun return, too.
Along with Cool Rider, there are also some other good songs. "Reproduction" is one of the funniest songs written, "(Love Will) Turn Back The Hands Of Time" is pretty nice and "Score Tonight" is lively and fun.
Altogether - this as good as sequels come (baring in mind, I've never watched any of the Godafther films and don't care to) and I give a wicked 7/10 - plus ½ extra for Michelle!!
This movie is actually not as bad as people say it is. I can't even
understand why people bother thinking of it as a sequel to Grease. I
it as a new experience altogether, and I actually... liked it.
I love the music in this movie musical. Although not quite sounding like the late 50's to early 60's, it is addictive. The songs stick in you head like super glue.
The story also has a more satisfying ending, and demonstrates independence, being who you are. In the end, Stephanie and Michael love each other for who they each are, not their images. I can't say the same for Grease.
My rating: *** (out of 5 *'s)
Ok first off I just gotta say this movie changed my life in 1982. I was 12 years old and this movie did so much for me I can't begin to tell you all. It made such a lasting impression on me and will always hold dear in my heart. This movie not only gave us Michelle Pfeiffer in her first ever starring role, but it also gave us Maxwell Caulfield and some great music. I consider Michelle's "Cool Rider" to be one of the greatest pop/rock songs ever written! It may not be a great composition, but its the coolest, slickest piece of movie music since "Greased Lightnin'" and "You're The One That I Want". This movie marked an end to an era of movie musicals and not since has there been any musicals of its calibur. I don't know where it all went wrong, but Hollywood stopped making musicals. This film is truly underrated. So many people can't see the fun and wonderfulness of this movie and it's a shame. People are so hung up on the sillyness of it, but get a clue, that is what movie musicals are all about. Look at every Elvis movie and look at Grease for goodness sake. A true classic and its really building a following nowadays. Grease.....it's still the word. The Music and Feeling Go on Forever. Pinks and Birds for ever!
When I 1st saw Grease, the 1st part, I though that was the most cheesy movie
But they had to make a 2nd part and belive me this one is even more
I think that the director, all the actors and the writters were all drunk
during the making this movie because I dont think that any sober person
would want to do it.
I am even more amazed that Pfeiffer's carear didnt hit bottom after this
I give this movie *** out of **********. This is because the lead actor is cute, but never less a bad actor. And because this movie made me belive in miracles, because if there was no miracles Michelle Pfeiffer would be now a mother of 10 and living on walfer.
This is one pathetic movie. I, along with everyone else with a pulse, love Grease. This sequel could only have been a pathetic effort to capitalize on the original's success in order to make a few bucks. The songs are HORRIBLE and the acting is weak. Don't waste the money or the two hours to see this one.
Horrible, yet oddly fascinating. The lyrics are cheesy in the extreme, the
plot lame, the acting lackluster. Maxwell Caulfield is more beautiful than
Michelle Pfeiffer but bland and unable to carry a tune. Pfeiffer just looks
Skip this bomb and rent Grease again.
Yes, it's true. Grease 2 is a bad, bad, awful movie. I LOVE IT!
The script is terrible. Many of the songs are pretty awful. But overall, I think the actors did a good job of making the best of what they had to work with.
In reading these posts I see that people are either trashing or praising the songs in this movie, but no one has mentioned the best song of the whole film: "Prowlin'" sung by Adrian Zmed and the T-Birds. Seriously! This song is so much fun! Try playing it loudly and singing along sometime. It's great.
I think that the Grease 2 soundtrack is quite special because it features one of the best movie songs ever (Prowlin') followed by the all-time worst (Reproduction). Both songs are kind of funny, but "Reproduction" is only funny because it's so bad. "Prowlin" is funny because it perfectly captures the ridiculous characterizations that were written for those T-Birds. And those four actors made it work, I tell you!
Grease 2 succeeds with it's full throttle BACK TO SCHOOL
AGAIN opening number and other catchy tunes. The only
noticeable flaw was the lack of period music that filled
up the first films soundtrack. There are times when it
doesn't have the feel of the early 60's and that could
have been fixed with more backround music typical of the
era. I think most people missed the way too subtle comedy
touches such as the T-BIRDS smoking and chewing bubble gum
at the same time. They are trying to look older and very
cool, yet they are not willing to give up the bubblegum of
their youth. Clever! The staging of its musical numbers is
great in that it utilizes unusual settings such as a
bowling alley, bomb shelter and a boys v.s. girls sex
education classroom song.
Maxwell Caulfield sings beautifully and and more
than pulls his share of the weight of this picture, Adrian
Zmed is less lucky and almost sinks the whiny but bouncy
"SCORE TONIGHT" number. But then we come back to the very
subtle comic antics of having included NUNS in the bowling
alley production, singing and dancing with the rest of the
gang! Inspired! Will any one forget the image of Michelle
Pfeiffer straddling the ladder during "COOL RIDER"? Then
to show her independence, turning her reversable pink
ladies jacket inside out to show a shiny black jacket?
Great images! The ending could have had a few more twists and turns ,but over all GREASE 2 is a lot of fun and in many mays surpasses the original in its creativity and boundless energy.
