Storyline

The Soviets have developed a revolutionary new jet fighter, called "Firefox". Naturally, the British are worried that the jet will be used as a first-strike weapon, as rumours say that the jet is indetectable on radar. They send ex-Vietnam War pilot Mitchell Gant on a covert mission into the Soviet Union to steal Firefox. Written by Murray Chapman <muzzle@cs.uq.oz.au>

Trivia

The story is loosely based on an actual event in which a Soviet fighter pilot (Viktor Belenko) defected to Japan on September 6, 1976. Belenko was stationed in Chuguyekva, Primorsky Krai, RSFSR (Soviet Russia) where he flew a MiG-25 to Hakodate, Japan - during his defection he brought the pilot's manual where the USAF where American personnel evaluated and tested the aircraft. The USAF determined that the MiG-25 was more of an interceptor rather than a fighter-bomber (which the F-15 Eagle had a superior edge, later demonstrated by the Israeli Air Force where it was used in combat against Syrian MiGs (they also operated the MiG-25) with no losses). {This may or may not be significant - the MiG-25 flown by the Syrians would have been the "export" model - the versions of military aircraft most major nations sell are of lower performance than the home models.} The captured MiG was later dismantled by the Japanese technicians and returned to the Soviet Union. Chilling Atmospheric Espionage Thriller
1 November 2004 | by (Guildford, England) – See all my reviews

Clint Eastwood plays Michael Gant, a burnt out veteran sent into the Soviet Union on a desperate mission to steal the greatest warplane ever built.

Minimal training, mental problems, murderous allies, constant danger. His only qualification - he speaks Russian, he knows how to fly and he fits the flight suit.

What I like most about Firefox is how it really puts you in Clint Eastwood's shoes. His character Gant is no super spy - he's a war veteran suffering severe mental problems as a result of his POW experiences. At every twist and turn of the plot the movie captures his tension and fear. His inexperience and mistakes endanger him repeatedly. His only protection - a thin, unravelling web of deception and a fickle KGB desire to observe a little before pouncing.

A must see for fans of atmospheric espionage films and Clint Eastwood.
