Since the beliefs that parents want to instill in their children can vary greatly, we ask that instead of adding your personal opinions about what is right or wrong in a film, that you instead use this feature to help parents make informed viewing decisions by describing the facts of relevant scenes in the title for each one of the different categories: Sex and Nudity, Violence and Gore, Profanity, Alcohol/Drugs/Smoking, and Frightening/Intense Scenes.
Visit our Parents Guide Help to learn more

Sex & Nudity

a brief kiss between 2 kids is shown about half way through the movie.

Violence & Gore

a boy slices his finger, you see a close up of his bloody cut.

Profanity

Two uses of sh*t. One use of son of a b*tch (whispered). A boy calls another boy "penis breath."

a scene where E.T gets drunk after a few too many, this is fairly comical

As far as smoking, there was a single scene involving tobacco use during a teenage card game early in the film. None of the teens were actually shown smoking, but there were cigarettes smoldering in ashtrays on the table. The scene clearly implied teenage tobacco use. The only other scene of smoking occured while ET watched a Tom and Jerry cartoon on the television.

a few scenes in the beginning that may cause a small child to be scared or jump. At the end of the movie, guns are shown, maybe scaring a few kids (The guns have been digitally removed for the 2002 re-release).

However of course, the alien (E.T.) should not scare kids at all. There is one scene, though, where Elliot sees E.T. in the cornfield for the first time. That scene might startle young viewers. (E.T. does get sick and turn white which is a little frightning)

near the end of the movie space men invade a house which is a little scary
