Advert. Subvert. Gonzo (Fake) Commercials within Films

24 November 2009 7:50 AM, PST | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

"Can't get enough, of the Stuff!"  From the mid-1920s whereupon the eventual Oscar winning film Wings featured a Hershey Chocolate Bar prominently in the story right on up to the use of M&Ms in Steven Spielberg's E.T. and beyond to the modern James Bond films or Castaway (FedEx) or The Great Yokai War (Kirin Beer) or perhaps the worst offender ever:  I, Robot, product placement is simply a large part of big expensive movies.  And many filmmakers have either parodied product placement (ahem, sorry:  Brand Integration) or even invented their own fictional consumer goods that only appear in their movies.  Unlike television, which (in large part) relies on advertising to fund the creation of shows, there are rarely full commercials used explicitly in a film (before the screening of the film is another story, unfortunately!).  But filmmakers love to offer ads for fake products or services or »

The Howling Do-Over Coming Soon

22 November 2009 11:45 PM, PST | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

You may well remember Joe Dante's werewolf movie The Howling, wherein Dee Wallace-Stone (the mum in E.T.!) played a woman being stalked by a terrifying killer who turns out to secretly be a werewolf. You probably don't remember its six sequels, but that's Ok because it's being rebooted with The Howling: Reborn, due out next Halloween.Joe Nimziki has written and will direct this new wolf story, making his directorial debut after a career as a marketing executive at studios including Sony and New Line. There's no word on the plot yet, but we're going to go out on a limb and guess that it involves people growing fur and fangs when the moon is full.Werewolves are, of course, so hot right now, and with another Twilight movie and The Wolf Man also due out this year, this is an idea whose time has arguably come. That, »

Lucy Dahl Says Screenwriter Melissa Mathison Trying to Adapt Bfg (Big Friendly Giant) For Producer Kathleen Kennedy

4 November 2009 4:11 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Earlier today I participated in a roundtable interview with Roald Dahl’s daughter, Lucy Dahl, for the movie “Fantastic Mr. Fox”.  Since so many of Dahl’s books have not been made into movies, we asked his daughter if she’s heard about any progress in bringing them to life.   The main thing she told us was…many people ask the Dahl estate to make movies, but they are very selective in what they will allow.

But while many of his books have never been optioned by Hollywood, she told us the hot book right now is “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar”. She then told us that producer Kathleen Kennedy has the rights to “Bfg” (Big Friendly Giant) and screenwriter Melissa Mathison (”E.T.”, “The Black Stallion”) has recently written a draft that has gone over well.  Of course writing a draft that people like doesn’t mean it’s a go project, »

Drew Barrymore learnt the directing ropes from Steven Spielberg

2 November 2009 2:56 PM, PST | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Drew Barrymore learnt everything she knows from Steven Spielberg.

The actress was just five years old when she starred in the iconic director's 1982 hit 'E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial', and the pair have been firm friends ever since.

The 34-year-old star said: "I've spent my whole life working with more than 60 directors, so I've picked up all kinds of tips. Steven Spielberg has been a big help.

"He gave me great notes. He's a wonderful mentor."

Drew's relationship with Steven is so strong, she even pays tribute to him in her latest film 'Whip It', a film about a roller derby which she directed and also stars in.

She explained to Empire magazine: "My favourite scene in 'Whip It' is actually the food fight, which is an homage to 'E. T.', when we had that big food fight in the lunch room."

Alien Encounters – Television's Memorable Extra-Terrestrials

Anna, the face of the Visitors - V

With the upcoming launch of "V",  it makes it the perfect time to reminisce about our favorite aliens of yore.   The extra-terrestrials who land on earth seem to come in three varieties:  aggressors, refugees, and observers.   But whether they have come to Earth with world domination on their minds, or they simply want to study the local ugly giant bags of mostly water, they almost always seem to stick around for a while.

So click-through and check out some of TVOvermind's favorite, and not so favorite aliens on television.

Aggressors

We've got a pretty nice planet here.  And they want it.  They want our resources; they consider us to be lower life forms and want us to supplement their food supply; they just want us dead.  No matter how you slice it, we are going to have a fight on our hands. »

'E.T.' Phones Home In Today's Sick Day Stash

28 October 2009 12:00 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Call them "cult classics." "Guilty pleasures." "Comfort movies." We all have a mental rolodex of flicks that may not be terribly popular but, for one reason or another, they resonate in a very special way. Maybe you saw it at the right moment. Maybe you just see gold where everyone else sees feces. Whatever the case, these are the special favorites that you keep stashed away for sick days. Here are some of ours.

I've been racking my brain all week for a good Halloween-themed Sick Day Stash pick. My focus had been on horror movies of course, since this is the time of year when we all dress up like someone or something else and attempt to scare the crap out of one another. Then, on Monday, I got an invite to check out a free, outdoor screening of a childhood classic (thanks to the 45th Street Block Association, »

5. Edward Scissorhands (1990): I would love to see how something like Edward Scissorhands would go over in today’s society. Clearly, if the school he’d be attending observed any of today’s weapon policies, he’d be expelled instantly and have at least 4 interviews on news programs and talk shows before the week was over about how the institution is “denying his fundamental right to express himself.” Edward Scissorhands reminds me a lot of many of the movies that came out in the late 80s, up until 1990. Dee Wallace Talks Horror -- Exclusive Video Interview

22 October 2009 1:31 AM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Know who we love? Dee Wallace that's who. So much so that we couldn't resist hanging with her for a bit and getting her view on her long and amazing career. Get ready to spend a few minutes with one very classy horror-loving lady!

In this exclusive interview actress and author Dee Wallace talks about working with many of the giants of modern genre cinema -- including Peter Jackson (The Frighteners), Steven Spielberg (E.T.), and Joe Dante (The Howling) -- as well as up-and-comer Rob Zombie (Halloween) and reliable craftsman Lewis Teague (Cujo).

That truly is an incredible resume of directors and films. Dee's got a lot to say about how she went from being cast as psychos to supermoms, the kinds of roles available for actresses over a certain age in Hollywood, and why the genre needs to respect itself in order to be worthy of our attention. A Conversation with Danielle Harris

Danielle Harris, star of four films in the Halloween franchise, as well as pictures like The Last Boyscout, City Slickers, Don't Tell Mom The Babysitter's Dead, and the television series Roseanne was kind enough to sit down with me at the 2009 Spooky Empire convention in Orlando, Florida to talk about her career. The interview was filmed live, but due to surrounding noise I have transcribed the conversation below.

Ja/Fangoria: First of all, can I say how nervous I am that we are making a film with John Landis sitting right over there?

Danielle Harris: (laughs)

Ja: We're here at the Spooky Empire convention in Orlando, Florida, and how has it been going for you so far?

Dh: It's been good! It's been really busy.

Ja: Have you met any creeps so far?

Dh: Not really at this show, only a handful. (laughs)

Ja: You actually lived here in Florida, »

Open Question: Your 5 Favorite Modern Film Scores

When you can recognize a movie from the score, chances are it's a great movie.  The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.  Back to the Future.  Lord of the Rings.  Psycho.  The Godfather.  Pretty much all John Williams: Jaws, Star Wars, E.T., and the rest. A lot of scores are phoned in nowadays, but then, they always were -- just like how back in the golden age of filmmaking, somebody was making The Hideous Sun Demon.  There's still a lot of good stuff, and each of us have our own particular favorites.  I'm not talking about "best" -- I'm talking about ... »

E.T. named greatest alien movie in new poll

We’ve seen them as friend and foe; cute little green men and terrifying, acid-spewing villains; and even taking human form in a bid to go undetected, yes, aliens have truly put their extraterrestrial stamp on cinema over the years. But which is the greatest alien movie ever? Well, that was the head-scratcher proposed by phone recycling website www.PhonePiggyBank.com, which collected 7,675 responses from their poll and coming out on top was Steven Spielberg’s enchanting E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial. The 1982 tear-jerker beat out Will Smith actioners, the acclaimed Alien franchise and even Arnie smoking a stoogie. Definitely a result to “phone home” about (come on – you knew it was coming!) »

Her recent "Grey Gardens" effort on HBO earned her an Emmy nomination, and showed how well she can deliver a dramatic role to the screen. Barrymore's elastic acting chops served her well last night on "Saturday Night Live", appearing on the long-running "live from New York" comedy skit show for nine episodes now. 'Toy Story 3' Trailer Details And Sam Raimi's For-Kids Horror Flick 'Burst 3D' In Today's Dailies -- 10/9/09

--The folks from ComingSoon got a chance to chat with "2012" director Roland Emmerich, who had some things to say about what's next. He's got two projects on his plate: one having something to do with William Shakespeare (details in the article) and the other, an adaptation of Isaac Asimov's "Foundation" trilogy. (ComingSoon)

--Writers, producers and all-around cool guys Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, who pretty much have an equity stake in Hollywood at this point, have some things to say about their upcoming View-Master movie. Apparently the idea for the story was born before the classic 3-D viewing toy came into the picture as a peg for a movie, from the mind of "Fringe" writer Brad Kane. Orci then references back to story relayed to the duo by "Transformers" producer Steven Spielberg, whose original idea for "E.T." had nothing to do with aliens. (Sci Fi Wire)

Orci, Kurtzman Discuss 'View-Master' Movie

9 October 2009 10:10 AM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

As we previously reported in early July, writer/producers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman (Star Trek, Transformers, Fringe) — along with Fringe writer/producer Brad Kane — are developing a movie based on the classic Fisher-Price 'View-Master' toy.

Meanwhile, during a recent press conference for the release of the Star Trek DVD, Orci and Kurtzman answered a few questions about the progress of the 'View-Master' project.

"The movies that work, work when there's a story there that you could take the toy out of, but then, when you put the toy in, it becomes an even more amazing experience," said Kurtzman. "Brad Kane, who was a writer for us on 'Fringe,' came to us with an amazing idea, that had absolutely nothing to do with View-Master. We loved it and thought it was fantastic."

"[Then] along came View-Master, and it sounded like the perfect marriage of ideas," Kurtzman added. "But, it's »

Happy Birthday, Gandhi: Wake-Up Video

2 October 2009 5:30 AM, PDT | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

Today marks the birthday of Mohandas Gandhi, the worldwide father of civil disobedience and peaceful revolution. It's a national holiday in India, as well as a day where the world is meant to reflect on non-violent alternatives. Gandhi began his professional life as a lawyer who fought for civil rights in South Africa, then returned home to his native India for a spiritual and political career that saw him fight for the rights of women and religious freedom. The centerpiece of his work were the peaceful protests he organized, many of which were to stand against the tyranny of outside influences and taxes from the British. Through the power of fasts, sit-ins and other forms of non-violent protest, Gandhi laid the ground work for a number of other peaceful movements worldwide — including the civil rights movement in the United States. Tragically, the man who made his life setting aside violence »
