Country Gold - Based in Reality?
LadyRLR10 April 2007
I thought that this was an interesting movie. I get the feeling that it is based, at least loosely, on Dolly Parton, but I have never heard anyone say that specifically.

The lead character is a famous blonde country singer who is up for an award. Another singer who is nominated for the same award tries to steal her fame (as well as her husband) by manipulating situations to her advantage.

Loni Anderson and Earl Holiman did a fine job in this movie. I remember seeing this on television some years ago, although I have not seen it recently.

Warning: Spoilers
Actually, it's all about Molly Dean.

Molly Dean Purcell, a dark-haired beauty in private and a be-wigged, white-hot blonde in public, is in the running for a country music award. New girl on the scene, Josie Greenwood is also in competition for the award, with her own song.

Molly Dean's manager-husband continues to book her gigs and interviews, despite Molly Dean's desire and expressed plans to scale back and live a more normal life.

Josie is ambitious and quickly moves into Molly Dean's life, starting a relationship with her guitarist, while pretending to be a wide-eyed ingenue, eager for Molly Dean's tutelage. She begins to overstep, and takes advantage of every opportunity to undermine Molly Dean, including causing her to miss a performance so Josie can step in. Josie manipulates situations and people, including Wade. When Wade confesses a secret about Molly Dean, Josie initiates a cruel confrontation and Molly Dean walks away from the business and her husband.

Josie is all too happy to fill the space, in every possible way.

Molly Dean's best friend/costumer heads out to talk to Molly Dean and encourage her to fight for what's hers - and to stop making Wade pay for her secret. At the Awards pre-ceremony, the now ex-boyfriend-guitarist has some dirt on Josie that he passes on to Wade, while Josie has a private conference with a recording bigwig.

Wade goes home to Molly Dean. They return for the awards show where Wade handles a columnist who printed an erroneous column, and Molly Dean applies some blush to Josie, backstage. The awards ceremony takes place.

Carol Chase handled the vocals for Loni Anderson's part and Lane Brophy provided those for Linda Hamilton. Beautiful voices for quite good songs, considering the short presentation. I still remember them, years later.
