During 1982, two comedy movies with similar titles were released examining the notion of whether male and female friends can become partners. One was Best Friends, a big Hollywood studio movie with lots of star power in Burt Reynolds and Goldie Hawn. The other was The Best of Friends, a smaller Australian film but featuring two big names from their film industry, Graeme Blundell and Angela Punch McGregor. The Best of Friends came out first on 25 February 1982 whilst Best Friends was premiered on 17 December 1982. The Australian film's tagline summed up both movies' themes: "They were the best of friends . . . until they fell in love!"
This movie's theme song "How Do You Keep the Music Playing?" was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Song and has been covered by Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand and Tony Bennett.
This movie's screen-writers Barry Levinson and Valerie Curtin separated around the time that this picture was first released. This movie that they wrote was semi-autobiographical.
This movie's title "Best Friends" is a bit of a fallacy. Even though they may be "best friends", from the start of the film, Burt Reynolds and Goldie Hawns' characters are living together as partners and are "more than friends".
Burt Reynolds once said of his co-star Goldie Hawn in this movie: "Goldie Hawn and I had been talking for five years about doing a movie together. She's someone who makes me laugh. Really laugh. I knew her when she was a dumb blonde and even then she was one of the smartest people I knew."
The trivia items below may give away important plot points.
The movie ends with Burt Reynolds and Goldie Hawn walking into a painted sunset studio backdrop. Earlier in the movie, it is mentioned how a film is going to end with two lovers walking into an artificial sunset.
