Since introducing horror fans to the fearsome flying spheres and terrifying Tall Man in Phantasm back in 1979, writer/director/producer Don Coscarelli has remained one of our most imaginative independent filmmakers.
With three Phantasm sequels under his belt as well as helming several other unique flicks including The Beastmaster, Bubba Ho-Tep and his latest trippy affair- John Dies at the End, Coscarelli remains fiercely loyal to bringing strange and haunting stories to life even after more than 35 years in the business.
Dread Central recently had the opportunity to sit down for an in-depth interview with Coscarelli while in Austin, Texas for the 2012 SXSW Film Festival, and after we had the opportunity to hear from the filmmaker regarding John Dies at the End, we also jumped at the opportunity to hear more from him regarding his ties to the independent horror world as well as a myriad of other topics in »

This is a reprint of our review from the Sundance Film Festival.
The problem addressing fans of “Midnight” films and wacky horror can succinctly be found in the opening of Don Coscarelli's “John Dies At The End.” It involves axe handles, zombies, mutant leeches, axe heads, hardware store trips and answering a dead man as to whether or not the axe in question is the same that killed him. Confused? If you are, then you don't want to stick around. If you're too overjoyed that the spiritual successor to Sam Raimi has appeared, you're in luck.
Adapted from the online “journal” turned book by David Wong (Jason Paragin), Dave Wong (Chase Williamson) is coming down from the Sauce, trying to tell his story to a reporter in a Chinese restaurant and not freak out that he's still in-between temporal dimensions. It all involves a viscous black drug known as Soy Sauce, »

Review of John Dies at the End at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival. Paul Giamatti is a welcome sight in Don Coscarelli's horror comedy. Writer/director Don Coscarelli is a multi-generational fan boy favorite for his '80s horror franchise Phantasm, his swords-and- sorcery adventure The Beastmaster and his 2002 horror comedy Bubba Ho- Tep starring Bruce Campbell as Elvis Presley. John Dies At The End, which makes its world premiere in the Park City at Midnight section at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, mixes all the laughs and gooey monster effects Coscarelli's fans have come to expect. Unfortunately, after a zesty opening involving multiple axes and the undead, John Dies At The End slowly loses its spark and dissolves into an average sci-fi and horror mash-up. »

Poster for Don Coscarelli's John Dies at the End, starring Chase Williamson, Rob Mayes, Paul Giamatti. Scripted and helmed by Coscarelli, the comedy fantasy horror is based on the novel by David Wong, and also includes Clancy Brown, Glynn Turman, Doug Jones, Daniel Roebuck, Fabianne Therese and Jonny Weston. Coscarelli is the helmer and screenwriter of the outrageously funny Bubba Ho-Tep, starring Bruce Campbell and Ozzie Davis. He also wrote 1982 The Beastmaster starring Marc Singer, Tanya Roberts and Rip Torn among others, a film I also used to love at that time. About John Dies at the End: It's a drug that promises an out-of-body experience with each hit. On the street they call it Soy Sauce, and users drift across time and dimensions. But some who come back are no longer human. Suddenly a silent otherworldly invasion is underway, and mankind needs a hero. What it gets instead is John and David, »

2011, a great year for film, is officially over. What seemed like a horrendous year for genre films in 2010 was quickly wiped clean by some very solid entries in 2011. The year saw a few major studio films really shine for genre film fans, but the real gems were some of the smaller films that were discovered on the independent or foreign circuit. This new year could see a return to form for major studios as an extremely lengthy list of titles are set to be released in the world of horror, sci-fi, cult, and fantastique. Similar to last year, 2012 will see many big name directors like Christopher Nolan, Peter Jackson, Ridley Scott, Quentin Tarantino, Chan-wook Park, Oliver Stone, and Tim Burton, release not only some of the most anticipated films of the year, but some of the most anticipated films for us genre fans.
Without further ado, let’s take a »
