It's so shameful that most Indian haven't watched this classical piece of Indian CINEMA THAT DEFINES WHAT WAS OUR CINEMA AND INDUSTRY ABOUT.

Coming back to the reviewing of this film, i believe this film is about your expectation of how disappointed you felt from the overall result of the film nor about the lack of movie tricks that would have made it exciting but actually, it is about the conditions and how, we are viewers, are helpless while seeing them rot and slowly die in their miseries and atrocities. It is about how those lived in that time and how they tried to survive through it.

Looking at the story which is about the socio-political issues around the time of 1960 to 1970 even to later period in west Bengal, it tells about how circumstances rise (AROHAN MEANS TO ASCENT) when tensions between farmers and zamindaars increases to grab hold the land which the former owns hereditary. And how the farmer's fight till his death decides the fate of him and the people around him and of those who are dependent on him for their lives and struggle to survive. Plus, it also talks of urban lives of rural people, criminal association of such people and the political turmoils going on everywhere.

Now, looking at the performances, Om Puri, who plays farmer Hari Mondal, Victor Banerjee who plays the role of Jotdar Bibhutibhushan Ganguly aka the zamindar, Pankaj Kapoor as Village Teacher, Noni Ganguly as Bolai Mandal, Hari's younger brother, Sreela Majumdar as Panchi and many others of whom i couldn't gather info about, you will just fall for them as they play it with full believe-ability that it would be hard for you to consider that they are actors, but go on believing that they are farmers and someone has captured them on his/her camera.

At last, Shyam Benegal, who is one of those directors and writers still working constantly till now from 1974 with ANKUR, it is hard for someone to believe that he constantly makes issue based films with full heart and full taste. And with AROHAN, he has done another marvelous attempt at capturing the lives and stories of those people who couldn't get out of their miseries.

IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR SOMETHING PURELY Indian STUFF, THEN GO ON WITH THIS ONE.
