Emmy Telecast Prepping Tribute to Robin Williams

13 August 2014 12:08 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Less than a year after Robin Williams appeared on the Primetime Emmy Awards telecast to salute his mentor, Jonathan Winters, producers of the Aug. 25 ceremony are preparing an on-air tribute to the actor-comedian whose suicide on Monday sent shockwaves through the showbiz community.

Details are sparse as the effort is just being pulled together by exec producer Don Mischer and others in the wake of the news that surfaced Monday afternoon.

“Plans for the In Memoriam segment are in discussion. While we are all still coming to terms with this week’s tragic news, we are working to give Robin Williams the proper and meaningful remembrance he so well deserves,” Mischer said in a statement.

The 66th annual Emmycast will air live on NBC.

Williams was part of an extended Emmycast tribute last year to five prominent TV personalities who died during the 2012-13 Emmy cycle. Williams paid homage to one of his greatest influences, »

Q&A: Jim Parsons and Bob Newhart on Actor Chemistry and the State of Sitcoms

7 August 2014 10:00 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

On “The Big Bang Theory,” Dr. Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons) idolizes his childhood hero, Professor Proton (Bob Newhart), much to the professor’s dismay. In real life, though, the admiration is a bit more mutual — and that was clearly evident when the two Emmy-nominated actors (Parsons for “The Big Bang Theory” and “The Normal Heart”; Newhart for “Big Bang”) met at the Paley Center in Beverly Hills for a conversation with Variety. As it turns out, the pair have more in common than brilliant comic timing: Parsons grew up in Houston, where Newhart recorded the 1960 album that launched his career, “The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart.” And on stage, both played the role of Elwood P. Dowd, a sweet man who befriends an invisible 6-foot rabbit in “Harvey.”

Variety: How did you two first meet?

Parsons: At the table read.

Newhart: Actually, we met at the Emmy Awards before that. »

Partners Review – FX Tries For Legal Odd Couple Throwback Sit-Com

5 August 2014 11:22 AM, PDT | AreYouScreening.com | See recent AreYouScreening news »

Partners Review

FX is rolling the dice with a new sit-com that pulls Martin Lawrence and Kelsey Grammer out of the past, and puts them in a new show that seems tailored to wedge into TV Land‘s schedule. Not that this describes a bad show on its own, but it doesn’t exactly feel like something that the network’s fans are clearly going to flock to. On the other hand, if FX is hoping to broaden its horizons, I hope it works out for them.

The show follows two attorneys, Allen Braddock (Grammer) and Marcus Jackson (Lawrence), as they find themselves thrown together by circumstance, and become partners. Braddock worked in his father’s prestigious law firm, but has managed to create such a horrible reputation for himself, that even his father fired him. Jackson is quite the opposite. Judges love him, he wants to help people whenever he can, »

“Haht” of Gold: Top 10 Oscar-Winning Actors from Massachusetts

11 July 2014 1:03 AM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

It is not too shabby in what the Northeast (New England) part of the United States has produced in terms of past and present actors/actresses making their show business dreams come true. Film careers can be a lot like ice cubes–they start out solid and cool but if you sit around in stagnation your efforts and hard work can melt away before one’s very eyes. Certainly no one can accuse this talented crop of thespians of being one-hit wonders on the big screen. After all, one does not become a recipient of an Academy Award by just sheer luck and charitable fortune.

As a native Bostonian and life long New Englander, I felt compelled to spotlight those Massachusetts-born and bred actors from the same region that had ultimate success on the big screen in winning the Oscar for their acting achievement and contribution to the motion picture industry. »

Meredith Baxter has been a TV star since 1972 when she starred in a CBS series called Bridget Loves Birney. We caught up with the actress to discuss her life today as well as her highly anticipated new series, MTV’s Finding Carter, which premieres tonight at 10/9c

Summer sitcom rewind: 'The Cosby Show' - 'Theo's Holiday'

We're continuing this periodic summer project where we revisit classic sitcom episode. Last week, we did a "NewsRadio" double feature, and today we're going to talk about one of my favorite episodes of "The Cosby Show," called "Theo's Holiday," coming up just as soon as my corporate headquarters has 49 floors but no phone... Periodically throughout the latter half of the 20th century, various TV genres would be declared dead and buried. Some of them actually stayed dead, more or less, like the Western, while others lay fallow, waiting for the right show to bring the public mood back to it. In the early '80s, the sitcom was the genre being put out to pasture, falling behind dramas of various stripes, from the lofty ambitions of "Hill Street Blues" and "St. Elsewhere" to the soapy environs of "Dallas" and "Dynasty" to the comedy/drama/action mix of "Magnum, P.I. »
