Dan Hedaya played Cher's dad in Clueless, Nick's dad on Family Ties, and Monk's dad on Monk. And now Vulture can break the news that the legendary character actor has signed on for another important paternal part: He'll play Danny's dad on an upcoming episode of The Mindy Project. The show telegraphed this development in last week's episode, in which Danny's brother Richie (Max Minghella) popped up to let his sibling know that he'd reconnected with their deadbeat dad (news that caused Danny to do physical harm to an LP of the Miami Vice soundtrack). We don't know much else about Hedaya's appearance, except that (a) his character is named Alan Castellano; (b) he lives in Joshua Tree, California; and (c) Mindy Kaling and Tracy Wigfield wrote the episode, which is scheduled to air in January. That gives you a few weeks to catch up on Hedaya's many other »

It's a little weird seeing Oscar nominee James Franco play a local Louisiana druglord named Gator in the latest Jason Statham movie, "Homefront" (though admittedly not much weirder than watching him play a grill-wearing Florida gangster named Alien in last year's "Spring Breakers"). Nothing against Franco, but High Times' 2008 "Stoner of the Year" isn't exactly the most intimidating foe for a walking action movie like Statham.
Still, a little weird can be a good thing, and thanks to Franco's gonzo villain, "Homefront" ends up being a lot more entertaining than Statham's last few solo projects. From a screenplay originally written by (and for) Sylvester Stallone, the movie stars Statham as Phil Broker, a former DEA agent who moves to rural Louisiana with his young daughter after the death of his wife, and unwittingly starts a blood feud with Franco's Gator Bodine, Raysville, Louisiana's very own meth kingpin.
And while Jason Statham vs. »

James Franco wasn’t a big fan of Michael Fassbender’s Shame. “He wasn’t such an addict in my opinion, though. I mean, what did he do? Watch porn and screw a handful of people a week? I could point to quite a few folks who do that. And that scene where he’s at his lowest point and wants to fuck and goes into a gay club, and it’s depicted like the seventh level of hell… I mean, it goes back to the horrible representations of gays in the 70s, where the gay club is meant to signify everything dark and depraved. Then the guy gets a minor blowjob, from, Oh no, a man! The horror!”

[This is a review of Castle Season 6, Episode 6. There will be Spoilers.]
It’s a fine balance to walk between allowing your child the freedom to make their own choices and recognizing that some things they will have to learn on their own. In the same way, it’s difficult to portray tension between a parent and grown child onscreen without one or the other looking foolish.
If last week’s Castle was a clumsy attempt at the first principle, “Like Father, Like Daughter” is an attempt at the second. But does it do a better job?
