Storyline

In a farmhouse in southern Italy, an old woman dies. Her husband summons their sons: from Rome, Raffaele, a judge facing a political case for which he risks assassination; from Naples, the religious and ideological Rocco, a counselor at a correctional institute for boys; from Turin, Nicola, a factory worker involved in labor disputes. Once home, each encounters the past and engages in reveries of what may come: Raffaele imagines his death, Rocco dreams of lifting the youth of Naples out of violence, drugs, and corruption, Nicola pictures embracing his estranged wife. Meanwhile, the old man and his young granddaughter explore the rhythms of the farm and grieve together. Written by <jhailey@hotmail.com>

A rewarding viewing on more than one level
25 December 2014 | by (Venezuela) – See all my reviews

My rating: 9.0/10

My opinion on the film:

Set during the most sociopolitically agitated years in twentieth- century Italy, this is a simple but profoundly emotional and honest family drama about three middle-aged brothers who are contacted by their father at the news of their mother's death. They are: Raffaele, a happily married and high rank judge directly involved in a widely press-covered political trial; Nicola, a factory worker who has just separated from his wife; and Rocco, single, a counselor at a correctional institute for boys. Both their mother's death and the hard times they are all in one way or another facing in their personal lives form the context of their reunion. They are presented to the audience individually and as a unit, bringing as a result that they become fleshed-out characters easy to make a connection with. Their father, an old man deeply affected by his wife's passing is a major and memorable supporting character despite not being given much dialogue or screen time.

Tre fratelli was a powerfully acted and emotionally involving picture. The family's dynamics and those three men's lives are explored with pathos and touching sensitivity, without ever falling into melodramatic territory. It was also politically aware concerning the times it depicted and really thought-provoking on that regard as well, which ultimately made it a rewarding viewing on more than one level.
