Disjointed gambling comedy
Leofwine_draca15 December 2022
NOTORIOUS EIGHT is one of Wong Jing's earliest gambling comedies, an ensemble all-star Shaw Brothers production that tells of a corrupt businessman in Hong Kong, played to the hilt by a wonderfully arrogant Lo Lieh. He ends up causing humiliation and death so a team of eight trickster heroes team up to take him down. Strongly reminiscent of THE STING, this has a bizarro nature with lots of characters who don't really justify being included but are merely there to feature big names like Chen Kuan Tai, Wong Yue, Ai Fei and Jing himself. The gambling scenes are a lot of fun but the rest is more than a little disjointed, although at least it's never boring.
