Did You Know?

Because producer Dick Randall was simultaneously making kung-fu films in Rome, a cameo for a Bruce Lee imitator, Bruce Le, was written into this film, even though this scene makes no sense in the context of the rest of the film.See more »
Factual errors: At the beginning of the film when the mother is screaming at her son over the pornographic puzzle she mentions that his father is in the Air Force. In 1942 when this scene took place, the US Air Force was not yet in existence. The main US flying force was called the US Army Air Corps until after WWII.See more »

Not bad, not good, a toss-up, 6 April 2000
Author: Casey-52 from DVD Drive-In

"Pieces" is a hard movie to review. First of all, it's not very well-made and is obviously a by-product of all the other slasher genre releases in the late 70s and early 80s. Second of all, there are appealing moments for gore fans, but little else for anyone else. It reminded me of a modern giallo, but with little class, no style, and overly graphic deaths.

Critics have labeled "Pieces" a sexist piece of garbage. While the violence towards women is particularly gruesome, can you think of any other slasher film that isn't? The cover of the video states "Winner Best Special Effects Horror Film Festival". I truly doubt this because while not overly fake-looking, they don't look very realistic, either. Gore fans will receive enough to keep them happy, but there is little else to offer to the general horror fan. If you're looking for intelligent, well-executed horror flicks, don't rent "Pieces". It borrows liberally from films like "Deep Red" (even including a Goblin-like score). The dubbing is odd considering this seems to be an American film made in Boston.

I would have to finalize by saying that "Pieces" is a guilty pleasure. Since it's technically a piece of garbage, the redeeming value of the film is its series of extremely gory chainsaw and butcher knife murders, the best of which are a decapitation, an arm amputation, a knife through a head (shades of "House by the Cemetery"), and a chainsaw ripping into a torso. I am not proud to be saying that gory murders make a film, but when it comes to pieces (no pun intended) of cinema like this, what else can I commend it? Of course, it does feature the lovely Lynda Day and the youthful acting of Ian Sera (who MST3K fans will note was the rock singer in "Pod People"!), but otherwise, recommended only for gore fans.
