My reaction to watching the trailer for Oliver Stone's upcoming "edgy" crime thriller, Savages, was, "Oliver Stone is finally making another Oliver Stone movie." This was followed by a thought about how safe the sometimes controversial director has been playing lately. But on reflection, I don't believe that assessment is completely accurate.

It's true that Stone's recent output seems somewhat anemic — a Wall Street sequel, a George W. biopic — and, with its violent imagery and Add editing, Savages looks to be a return to the director's mid-'90s coke-addled madness. But, in reality, Stone has always been a rather schizophrenic filmmaker, whipping back and forth between the inside and the outside.

When I think of Stone, I tend to think of flicks like Natural Born Killers and JFK — audacious experiments that tread the tenuous border between art and commerce. But when I look back on his entire output, that's not who Stone is. »
