Storyline

Siamo in Portogallo, a metà del diciannovesimo secolo. Josè Augusto, donnaiolo, e Camilo Castelo Branco, scrittore, due aristocratici un po' decadenti, sono amici ma rivali in amore. Entrambi desiderano la bella e fragile Francisca, e, a causa di ciò, arrivano a rompere la loro amicizia. Per vincere la titubanza della ragazza, Josè la rapisce e la sposa ; ma una lettera anonima mette in dubbio la onestà e la verginità di lei. Turbato e geloso, il marito la lascia la seconda notte di nozze per incontrare la sua amante. Per Francisca è il crollo : ferita nell'amore e nell'orgoglio, si lascia morire durante un attacco di tisi. Alla sua morte, Josè ordina l'autopsia del corpo della moglie: la lettera anonima aveva torto, la moglie era illibata. L'uomo non regge al rimorso e si suicida. Written by rosebud6
