After stealing a lab coat and an ID from the doctor's dressing room at McLarren State Hospital, Paul returns to the hospital posing as Doctor Peter Carter, court appointed physician to Nirvana. He makes his way to Section C where Nirvana is being held for psychiatric observation. Paul tricks the guard into letting him into the locked ward and arranges to interview Nirvana in a room that was once used for shock therapy. He assures the guard that he would prefer to be alone with Nirvana and enters the meeting room. Once inside, he drops his clipboard and lunges at Nirvana. A violent fight breaks out. Nirvana stabs Paul several times with a scalpel then smashes him into the electroshock machine. When Paul ducks another punch, Nirvana's hand smashes through the machine and Paul switches on the power, shocking Nirvana to death. Paul turns to see the guard standing in the door, having witnessed the fight. Paul collapses in a chair, saying only, "He raped and killed my daughter." The guard, having read about it in the papers, sympathizes with Paul and gives him three minutes to escape before signaling the alarm. Meanwhile, Geri has gone to Paul's house, packed and ready to elope with him to Mexico. She finds a scanned copy of his stolen ID from McLarren and realizes that Paul has lied to her, used her to gain access to the hospital, and is really the vigilante that Ochoa claimed him to be. She takes off her engagement ring, places it on top of the scan, and leaves. Paul comes home to an empty house. In the final scene, which takes place several months later, Paul presents an architectural design to his boss and is invited to a party. When his boss asks Paul whether he's free, Paul replies, "What else would I be doing?"
