Close up: Prometheus Rising

16 hours ago | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Catch up with the last seven days in the world of film

The big story

Prometheus is now very nearly upon us. The 'most anticpated film of the year' (as the poster has it) hits UK cinemas tomorrow, and if you're already planning to see it you may wish to whet your appetite further with this video, in which director Ridley Scott and star Noomi Rapace discuss extra terrestrials, the danger in searching for answers to life's big questions, and how much Alien, Scott's 1979 sci-fi horror classic, has influenced his new film.

If that's not enough for you, read our in-depth interview with Prometheus screenwriter Damon Lindelof, take a look at our gallery of the 10 best screen aliens, or cut straight to the chase and find out what Peter Bradshaw made of Prometheus in his review – which, in some quarters, was nearly as eagerly anticipated as the film itself.

Fast Girls: how the Olympics dream inspired 'the new Chariots of Fire'

26 May 2012 4:13 PM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Fast Girls, a film about a British women's sprint relay team, might just repeat the success of the 1981 Oscar winner

When the film director Hugh Hudson and producer David Puttnam sought the perfect cast to play the athletes in Chariots of Fire, they wanted relative unknowns in the lead roles. Their strategy worked: the film went on to win four Oscars in 1981, earning the status of a British classic.

The director and producer of Fast Girls, a new British film about the UK athletics team, started from the same principle and with hope for the same outcome. Regan Hall, a New Zealander directing his first feature film, was determined to find young actresses who could be credible as elite athletes.

After holding racing auditions in Regent's Park, London, he and his producer, Damian Jones, selected those who would become the stars of their Gb sprint relay team, training for six »

Zara Phillips carries Olympic Torch on horseback

Britain's Zara Phillips carried the Olympic torch on horseback in Cheltenham yesterday (23.05.12). The 31-year-old royal rode the entire length of the finishing straight at Cheltenham Racecourse on Toytown - the horse she retired last year after winning world and European eventing titles - on the fifth day of the Olympic torch relay in the run up to the London 2012 Olympic Games. More than 16,500 people - including Zara's mother, Princess Anne, who received the flame in Greece last week - turned out to see the blonde equestrian ride down on the track, with the 'Chariots of Fire' theme playing in the background. After dismounting Toytown, Zara - who is married to England rugby player Mike »

'Ishtar': Seven Myths Regarding The Legendary Flop

21 May 2012 10:49 AM, PDT | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

"If all of the people who hate 'Ishtar' had seen it, I would be a rich woman today." So said Elaine May in 2006, two decades after the Warren Beatty-Dustin Hoffman comedy she wrote and directed had become synonymous with "extravagant flop." (The film grossed $14.4 million on a $55 million budget.) Up until May 22, 1987 (the day it opened in theaters, 25 years ago), advance buzz on "Ishtar" was contentious; it was either a brilliant comic masterpiece or a textbook case of overreach on the part of two giant Hollywood egos to whom no one could say, "No." After the film's release... same thing. To this day, the movie is roundly mocked for its alleged awfulness (often by people who've never seen it), while a passionate cult of fans insists it's a lost work of misunderstood genius that never got its proper due from critics or moviegoers. The truth lies somewhere in the middle. »

Hyde Park Entertainment and Image Nation Abu Dhabi are set to finance and co-produce Arctic family adventure feature "Midnight Sun" which begins shooting in Canadian Arctic and Manitoba in November.

Chariots Of Fire Helmer Comes Out Of Retirement For Midnight Sun

1 May 2012 9:38 AM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

English filmmaker Hugh Hudson started out as an editor of documentaries in the 1960s, and before long was making his own. Yet it is for his first narrative feature Chariots of Fire for which Hudson is best known. The biopic that followed the harrowing drama of two contentious track stars running in the 1924 Olympics won critical acclaim and four Oscars, including Best Picture. However despite this early success, Hudson's career as a film director sputtered, then came to a screeching halt in 2000, after the Kim Basinger-fronted biopic I Dreamed of Africa proved to be major flop critically and at the box office. Since then, his only screen effort has been a little-known documentary called Rupture: A Matter of Life Or Death, which he created for BBC4. So frankly, it's shocking to see Variety report that Hudson is set to return to the director's chair to helm a new narrative feature, »

question of the day: What could Fox have possibly done to the remastered Chariots of Fire that would warrant a review embargo?

1 May 2012 4:02 AM, PDT | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

Last night I attended a screening of a remastered edition of the 1981 film Chariots of Fire, which won the Oscar for Best Picture in 1982 and which will be rereleased in the U.K. on July 13 as part of the Olympic celebrations. Attendance at the screening came with this caveat: With your attendance you recognise that you must not publish any reports or reviews in print, TV, radio or online (including Blogging, Social Sites, Forums or Online Chats) [until the week of release] This is a fairly standard embargo... for a brand new film that is highly anticipated and is in a position to be spoiled (or that just might suck to high heavens). It makes sense, too, for Fox to embargo reviews even on a classic film until the week of rerelease: this maximizes publicity for the film at the point when readers will actually have access to it. But no tweeting? No posting brief »

30 ads where music made the difference – and why agencies should think of music first, not last

30 April 2012 4:14 PM, PDT | Encore Magazine | See recent Encore Magazine news »

Music can make an average ad great. So why, Robin Hicks asks, is music the last thing a creative thinks about when writing an ad?

My favourite TV ad of the year so far is the Let Yourself Go spot for Kangaroo Island.

When it didn’t win Mumbrella’s Ad of the Month for March (it came third) I felt aggrieved for the agency that made it. But less so a week later when it emerged that the agency had paid celebrities to tweet nice things about its work.

Let Yourself Go is a stunning spot with lots of pretty images. But it would probably have had a similar effect on me if I’d watched a blank screen for 60 seconds.

John Baker of Adelaide ad agency Kwp!, which made the ad, told me that the music (Rise by Pearl Jam singer Eddie Vedder) “is 50% of the communication”. For me, »

Fda’s Summer of Cinema Film Quiz – Report

29 April 2012 3:01 PM, PDT | Blogomatic3000 | See recent Blogomatic3000 news »

Last Thursday saw the UK Film Distributor’s Association reveal the line-up for this summer’s film releases through the medium of a film quiz and what seemed suspiciously like a rather large piss-up. As everyone knows, the film industry historically does inversely well in times of recession; well, we must really be screwed financially if the statistics in the Fda’s press release are to be believed: the UK box office is at the time of writing 4% ahead of its takings from this time last year and has passed the £300m barrier faster than ever.

After finding myself the only representative from B3K at the event and being disinclined to go solo on the quiz, I was readying myself to make my apologies and do one, however, a kindly attendee sought out an equally accommodating team from the excellent Find Any Film website who were willing to take on a Billy-no-mates straggler. »

Richard Jenkins Set For One Square Mile

23 April 2012 5:01 PM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

He can currently be seen scaring things up for Joss Whedon’s Cabin In The Woods, but Richard Jenkins plans to be a little nicer to the human race for his next trick. He’s signed on to star as a reclusive track coach in One Square Mile. The film finds Cameron Bright as a young man from the wrong side of the tracks who fears his life may forever be mired in poverty. But a spark of hope comes in the shape of his running talent, and he gets some encouragement and training when he somehow persuades a grouchy trainer (Jenkins) to help him out. Sounds a bit like Finding Forrester meets Chariots Of Fire, which we guess could be a good thing - especially with Jenkins aboard.Charles-Olivier Michaud is the director in charge of this one, which has been written by Josh Campbell and Jeff Van Wie. »

DVD Playhouse—April 2012

By Allen Gardner

Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close (Warner Bros.) An eleven year-old boy (newcomer Thomas Horn, in an incredible debut) discovers a mysterious key amongst the possessions of his late father (Tom Hanks) who perished in 9/11. Determined to find the lock it matches, the boy embarks on a Picaresque odyssey across New York City. Director Stephen Daldry and screenwriter Eric Roth have fashioned a film both grand and intimate, beautifully-adapted from Jonathan Safran Foer’s novel, thought by most who read it to be unfilmable. Fine support from Jeffrey Wright, Sandra Bullock, John Goodman, Viola Davis and the great Max von Sydow. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Featurettes. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-hd 5.1 surround.

Battle Royale: The Complete Collection (Anchor Bay) Adapted from Koushun Takami’s polarizing novel (compared by champions and detractors alike as a 21st century version of A Clockwork Orange) and set in a futuristic Japan, »

'Alien' (1979) - the movie 'Prometheus' must live up to

Unless you've been hiding under a rock on Lv-426 for the last eighteen months it can't have escaped your notice that after more than three decades since first introducing the word 'xenomorph' into popular culture, and scaring a good few cinema-goers in the process, director Ridley Scott is returning to the universe of inaudible screaming that he fashioned with Alien (1979). Though not strictly a prequel to his celebrated classic, or so the director would have us believe, the upcoming Prometheus is definitely set in the same universe and, as Scott himself puts it, shares "strands of Alien's DNA, so to speak."

As a massive fan of Scott's original film, I'm genuinely excited about a new Alien movie for the first time in years (having suffered through Alien Resurrection (1997), which even a screenplay by The Cabin In The Woods (2012) co-writer Joss Whedon couldn't save, and the duo of lame Avp »
