Intense, thought provoking, gripping !!
etetreault5 January 2002
Lynda Carter plays a caring social worker that is suddenly drawn into a horrid reality of underworld mayhem. Babies are bought from troubled teenagers and then are placed into the hands of unstable parents for a fee of $ 30,000. Can you believe it. The sadest part of all is that this has really happened. Watch this one if you might see it on tv again. While Lynda Carter investigates the businessman believed to be responsible, she puts her own life in danger from the band of villians working for him. She is threatened, manipulated and puts her job in jeopardy desperately trying to crack the operation wide open. Of course, the best reason of all to watch this is that the beautiful Lynda Carter stars in it!!!

Why do I subject myself to this kind of stuff?

Warning: Spoilers
Lynda Carter is Kate Carlin, a social worker with a 14 year old pregnant girl as one of her clients. The girl has agreed to put her baby up for adoption through a private attorney rather than the State. After the baby is born, she changes her mind about the whole adoption process and wants to keep her baby. But the greedy attorney will hear none of this and goes ahead and gives the baby to parents that he secretly knows to be unfit. In steps Kate Carlin to save the day and put a stop to the baby-selling ring.

Why do I subject myself to this kind of stuff? I don't know if The Lifetime Network existed in 1981, but Born to Be Sold is pure Lifetime melodrama. I'll admit that the situation the young girl found herself in was heartbreaking, but the way the film presents the story lacks a lot of realism. Take the scene where Kate Carlin spots an intruder in her home. The reaction on the part of the character and the lack of police involvement did not ring true. Or, take the greedy, slimy attorney played by Harold Gould. He's just a little too greedy and a little too slimy to be believable. To be a man in his position, he takes far too many chances and brags a little too much to be successful for very long. Again, it's not realistic.

This isn't worth being borrowed or rented, let alone sold.

Warning: Spoilers
Yeah right. Lynda Carter is totally believable as a social worker in a police precinct who takes care of family related issues. Anyone who has ever dealt with social workers in that department can tell you that none of them ever looked like Lynda Carter. If anything, she would be perfect as the woman who illegally adopted a child, perhaps not knowing it was illegal, and maybe even as a cop, but social worker? No way.

I also question the photographer who chose at one point to focus on Carter's butt as she walked across the set, a photography choice that makes no sense and has no purpose. Carter is far too well dressed and upscale looking. Donna Wilkes is the single mother to be originally seen in an unwed mother halfway house when Carter comes in as she's being abused, and the next thing you know, the baby has been taken and Carter is dealing with the adoption lawyer, Harold Gould.

He's seemingly cooperative at first but later quite ruthless as he tries to stop her. It's fascinating to see Rhoda's father and Rose's boyfriend playing the villain even though he had done that in several Disney films. Lloyd Haynes, Claire Malis and Joy Garrett are also featured with Malis the sophisticated adoptive mother, obviously isn't aware of the circumstances of how she got the baby. This is mainly defeated by a weak script and a preposterous situation with cliched bad guys practically twirling their mustaches.
