Written by <e.o@strath.ac.uk>
Few movies are made in Austria, compared to other countries. Even fewer are worth a statement. "Der Bockerer" is one of Austria's finest movies of all times!
It is set during the occupation of Austria by the Nazis. The name "Bockerer" can be translated as "recalcitrant" and that's exactly what the film is about. "Karl Bockerer", who owns a little butcher's shop in Vienna, is definitely not happy with the Nazis invading "his" country and he expresses this feelings too, which gets him into trouble with the Nazi authorities quite frequently. Only his ability to talk them silly, or presenting himself as a total idiot saves him from being arrested or executed.
Sometimes it's funny, but it's no comedy. It's very serious too, but it ain't no drama. It has a historical background, but it's not a documentary. It's definitely well acted, well told and it's somehow unique.
Basically, i think "Der Bockerer" is not just a movie, it's says a lot about us Austrians. It's some kind of mentality study as well. And just maybe... a little bit of gallows humor helps as you watch it...
