Robert Blake figures and fights his way through a complex case involving a rich family
13 September 2012 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

This movie is a winner for crime and film noir fans. There's lots of narration, but it works because we see how the logical mind of Blake as private eye Joe Dancer works, and even so we are not told some clues that come in the action. There's a good dose of action. For a TV movie, the script is very detailed. Locations are adequate. Acting is more than adequate with one overplayed scene. Blake more than makes up for it as he digs into the part and conveys his mood and emotion shifts well.

A wealthy family that made its money in past shady dealings now is grooming one member for governor, but a renegade son with a conscience might possibly nix the deal. He's gone missing and Blake is hired by Jo Beth Williams, one of the family (his sister), to find him. Later the family matriarch gets into the act and an assortment of heavies. Blake is all but framed but finds some wiggle room. His ace in the hole is a body he has hidden in a refrigerated rail car.

Had this been an ordinary movie with more takes to smooth out the rough spots, it'd be a 7. As it stands, it's still OK for fans of noir. Joe Dancer even has a Bogart collection, we learn. I was pleasantly surprised. I've begun to feel badly that the option to this series was not picked up.
