How Nadia met Yorgo
28 January 2009 | by (Rijswijk, ZH, Netherlands) – See all my reviews

Yorgo Voyagis presents his then girlfriend Nadia Cassini as a social worker who dreams of a singing career and naturally plays her love interest herself. They did not even bother to come up with a different name for her character, or any sort of background for her character. This Nadia, like the one playing her, hails from the USA, a place her disapproving co-worker (who is not clearly credited and never gets a good close-up) keeps reminding her to return to. The film also features an abundance of footage filmed during one of Cassini's actual concerts, in which she prances around in a plethora of revealing costumes and shakes her best asset around a lot.

After waking up from a lovely musical fantasy and having a shower in the bathtub, the Nadia within the film is tasked to keep an eye on a group of social misfits living near a garbage heap (though not nearly as vile as the one in "Brutti Sporchi e Cattivi"). Chief amongst these ne'er do wells is Renzo Montagnani as Gratta, who is trying to knock off his own grandmother to get at her money. Then there is Fiorenzo Fiorentin as a Fagin like Monsignore who is teaching the local youth how to steal. Bit actor Nino Terzo has a surprisingly large part as the flatulent Lacrima who hangs around funerals and Yorgo Voyagis plays a handsome dealer/ would be bank robber who is in league with a crooked priest.

In truth, Nadia does seem to be quite unsuitable for the job, losing herself in daydreams at every turn and falling for the untrustworthy Bel Ami (Yorgo). In a very strange change of luck, Irene Papas appears on the scene wearing a white period costume and being transported in a canoe by two young slave boys. I'm not sure what the reference is supposed to be here (a commercial of the early eighties perhaps?) but this 'Lady from Guatalupe' (who claims to be over a century in years) is certainly no saint, for she actually helps the gang that couldn't hit water if they fell out of a boat to steal a holy relic right under the nose of a visiting cardinal. Nadia has joined the gang at this point in the proceedings as well.

After all is said and done, Nadia fans are treated to a final montage of her concert tour. We see her performing various numbers (but only hear one on the soundtrack) and signing autographs for actual fans who got lucky and ended up in a movie for the price of a concert ticket. It's not even that long a number, but as it is such a cheap way to fill in a finale, it seems to go on forever.
