It's been six months since she kicked Danny out and Gemma meets Raif, who is a much younger man. Gemma is reluctant to go out with him but he is persistent. They eventually go out but she decides that the age difference is too great.
Gemma meets Julia for lunch, who says that Gemma should forget about love and have more fun. Gemma is getting mysterious phone calls. She finds out that the calls are from a young man from an upstairs flat. She ends up in bed with him.
The doctor diagnoses anxiety when Gemma visits him to find out why she is having trouble sleeping. He suggests that Gemma go on a holiday, so she decides to go to a remote cottage for a complete break, which doesn't impress her mother.
Gemma is upset when she returns from holiday as her goldfish has died. She also finds out that her great aunt Cissy has died. Gemma is asked to scatter her ashes, a task she finds upsetting. To thank her, Cissy leaves Gemma a sum of £3000.
Gemma has received the £3000 left to her by great aunt Cissy and decides to to spend the money buying a car. Sebastian offers to reteach her how to drive. Unusally, he finds himself very attracted to his latest woman, Rosie.
As Rosie and Sebastian become more serious, she reveals to Gemma that she already has a lover, Rex. Rex punches Sebastian but meets Gemma when he comes around to apologise. He takes her out on a date and they hit it off.
Gemma's mother starts going through menopause so she decides to go on a short holiday and Howard surprises her there. Sebastian proposes to Rosie and she accepts. Rex is unhappy with Sebastian coming down in the mornings, as is Rosie.
