Storyline

Jack Holborn is 13-year-old orphan in the 1800's that wants to get a job on a sailship to avoid foster homes. He is hired by Captain Sharingham, and they set sail. Jack was found on the steps of the Holborn catholic church in London, when he was a baby. He was wearing a leather arm band with the name "Jack" on it. The nuns therefore called him Jack Holborn. At the sight of Jack's arm band, the captain reveals that the band looks familiar, but he won't tell Jack what he knows. The captain is now reluctant to keep him. Jack is desperately seeking answers, and is not about to let the Captain off the hook. The Captain also has a twin brother who works as a judge. The two brothers hate each other, mostly because of the captain's piracy side business. Jack sneaks onboard the Captain's ship "Charming Molly", and the journey begins. A journey that consists of piracy, traveling through swamps, and slavery in Bombay. Jack will find his answers, but the road there is long. Written by Annie Gravdal

Words fail me.

Nearly 20 years ago I watched Jack Holborn on Israel's one television channel during one of the holidays. I'm not sure how much of it I watched, as I don't remember anything about it except what is on the one episode I managed to record (the sixth and final one). Back in those days the Israel Broadcasting Agency had a nack for finding and screening excellent foreign miniseries. We had Jack Holborn, Tim Tyler's Luck, Das Boote, Return to Treasure Island (with Brian Blessed), Return of the Antelope, Planet of the Giants, Captain Cook, and an assortment of films like Lensman, Flight of Dragons, and so on. To this day I have seen no channel match that sort of quality.

Jack Holborn featured amazing acting. The actor portraying Jack was able to give an extremely realistic performance, and the actor for Solomon Trumpet was particularly convincing. As well as this, the soundtrack for Holborn, featuring a tune by Christian Bruhn called the Captain's Theme, remains my favorite music to this day - with it's hauntingly sad harpsichord strains and eerie orchestral backing.

I would recommend this series to others if I felt anyone had the chance to get hold of it. However, you'd have to be luckier than Tim Tyler to stand a chance of finding anyone with any episode other than 6; which is itself not exactly widely available.

I suppose the truest statement I could make, and the one I will make is...they don't make series like this anymore.
