CW Expects to Notch Volume Gains in TV’s Upfront Market

21 June 2017 9:48 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Advertisers attracted to a growing slate of superhero dramas and a revival of the long-running drama “Dynasty” helped boost upfront volume at the CW, another signal that the 2017 market for TV advertising could be more robust than had been previously expected.

The CW expects a gain in volume of advance ad commitments of between 3% and 5%, according to a person familiar with the matter. This means the network, owned jointly by CBS and Time Warner, could have collected commitments worth between $490.9 million and $549.4 million. In 2016, the CW notched commitments believed to be valued between $476.6 million and $523.2 million.

The Mystery of Why Top TV Producers Shonda Rhimes, Greg Berlanti and Chuck Lorre Haven’t Won an Emmy

30 May 2017 1:05 PM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Shonda Rhimes, Chuck Lorre and Greg Berlanti are easily the most powerful producers on TV. Yet none of them have ever won a Primetime Emmy.

Ten years ago, that might not have been the case. But Rhimes, Lorre and Berlanti produce populist fare for (mostly) broadcast networks, at a time when those shows are no longer on the Emmy radar.

In 2016, the broadcasters were shut out of the top Emmy categories for the first time in the award’s history. Never before had the top drama, comedy and actor and actress prizes gone exclusively to cable and streaming services.

But last year’s results were the culmination of a trend that began when “The Sopranos” star Edie Falco won the Emmy in 1999 for Outstanding Drama actress. By 2001, HBO had grabbed the first outstanding series prize for a cable series (“Sex and the City”), as well as both top drama acting »

From ‘The Office’ to ‘Wonder Woman’: Get to Know Lucy Davis

26 May 2017 12:08 PM, PDT | Entertainment Tonight | See recent Entertainment Tonight news »

British actress Lucy Davis is best known for her comedic chops. You may have seen her in Shaun of the Dead or on the FX comedy series Better Things. But you probably know her as receptionist Dawn Tinsley on the U.K. version of The Office (you know -- the original version). “It brought new things into my life, opportunities that I hadn’t had before, doors opened that hadn’t opened before,” Davis tells Et of the role that first brought her fame.

Today, the 44-year-old Brit is taking on a new kind of role as Etta Candy, sidekick and best friend to Gal Gadot’s Diana Prince, in the upcoming superhero film Wonder Woman. Davis' take on the role marks the first time Etta is making an appearance in a live-action feature film.

The Link Down

It's impossible to keep up these days. So herewith a bunch of news we haven't covered and other enjoyable places to go on the web today...

Baz Lurhmann has written a letter to fans about the cancellation of The Get Down, his Netflix series. My favorite bit because I like having him on the big screen in 2 hour doses:

All sorts of things have been thrown around for the future... even a stage show (can you imagine that? I can, concert version anyone? Next summer? Just saying.) But the simple truth is, I make movies. And the thing with movies is, that when you direct them, there can be nothing else in your life. Since The Get Down stopped, I have actually been spending the last few months preparing my new cinematic work...

The Dynasty Revival Cast Has Already Perfected the Dramatic Reaction Shot and It's Beautiful to Watch

19 May 2017 6:07 AM, PDT | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

Oh. My. Dynasty. Rejoice, soap lovers, because The CW is bringing back one of TV's most iconic series, Dynasty, and it looks just as over-the-top and decadent as the original show. And while they have some pretty big shoulder pads to fill (All hail, Joan Collins!), the cast is more than ready for their dramatic close-up. We know this because E! News put them on the spot on the red carpet at the network's Upfront presentation in New York City, asking Alan Dale, Elizabeth Gillies and Nathalie Kelley to give us their best dramatic turn to the camera. Warning: the video above will give you chills. That's how damn good the cast is at bringing the dramatic stare. Of course, Alan »

Oh sure, rich people may get tax breaks and spa days, chauffeurs and designer duds, but none of that means anything if a rival rich family is allowed to prosper in peace.

The CW’s new series “Dynasty” takes that classic ‘80s primetime soap and updates it for the modern era. Sorry, but that means no linebacker-worthy shoulder pads or feathered hair. But there are still cat fights!
