Excellent bittersweet comedy of a nostalgic chronicle
1 December 2016 | by (Spain) – See all my reviews

It is a bittersweet comedy with endearing situations, frequent cinephile citations in Garci and a political discourse, more intuited than explicit, of romantic and evocative rebellion, "Viva La Clase Media" takes us back to the daily life of a group of young militants from the political left (a small communist cell) in the early 1960s, and their clandestine lives struggling from modesty to freedom. In the film they happen the subversive propaganda, the multicopista, the clandestine leaflets, the races before the "Grises" (the armed police), in illegal demonstrations defending the freedom and the democracy. With a certain tone of "Sainete Cariñoso y Amabel", as its director called it who lived in hiding some of the adventures that appear in this film.

The film has an excellent cast of charismatic actors for the films of González Sinde and Garci, headed by a great Emilio Gutiérrez Caba who is the director's own alter ego. A film without great artistic pretensions, reminiscent of the Italian comedy of the sixties, a bitter and disenchanted "Costumbrismo", the music of Federico Chueca gives it a special character of a "Castizo" Madrid, as well as "El cant dels Ocells", a beautiful melody of the Cello by Pau Casals, which gives the film a poetic air and nostalgic memory Good character definition, subtle and gradual, stepped and very interesting.

It is not a political satire; rather it is the nostalgic chronicle of dreams and expectations that over time were diluted in memory and oblivion, in a way, a tribute to those modest militants of ideas too naive to become actually. They are a restless young man and a dreamer of just causes.
