Cannes: David Cronenberg Talks The "Strange Mutant Hybrid" Of 'Cosmopolis'; Robert Pattinson Says There's No Link Between His Own Life & Eric Packer

25 May 2012 10:03 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Over the past decade, notorious and beloved director David Cronenberg took a curious turn in his filmmaking career: he became normal. (Though anyone who tries to label his lot of ‘00s films like “A History of Violence,” “Eastern Promises,” or even “A Dangerous Method” as "normal" is most certainly speaking in relative terms.) While he may not be exploding heads “Scanners”-style, or exploring the depraved life of a smarmy TV executive with a lust for violent programming in “Videodrome,” Cronenberg has still managed to put his own twisted spin on all three of those ‘00s films, from the family drama in 'History' to the biopic-like nature of 'Method.' With his adaptation of Don DeLillo’s novel “Cosmopolis,” which follows a 28-year-old billionaire’s stretch limo ride across Manhattan that soon turns into a warped odyssey that tears apart his own world, it looks as if Cronenberg is returning »

Supporting Actors: The Overlooked and Underrated (part 2 of 5)

24 May 2012 12:12 AM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Oliver Reed as Athos in The Three Musketeers & The Four Musketeers (Richard Lester, 1973/1974, UK):

These films were actually shot all at once but ultimately released as two separate films telling one long story. As the musketeer with a dark past, Oliver Reed provides a lot of the heart and soul in these very entertaining and well-made films. Technically, since we have to isolate one film for our fantasy nomination, it would be The Four Musketeers as his role is more prominent in that film. Reed’s reunion scene with Faye Dunaway’s Milady is superb as is Reed’s intense swordplay with an array of opponents including Christopher Lee. An underrated actor whose career was damaged by well-documented alcohol problems and notorious off-screen behavior, Reed still logged in some truly incredible acting performances over the course of his career. His portrayal of Athos is definitely one of them.

Incredible Traveling David Cronenberg Exhibit Coming Soon

23 May 2012 2:40 PM, PDT | Movies.com | See recent Movies.com news »

Toronto is a great city and one we love to visit, but the Canadian metropolis just became ten thousand times more amazing since the masterminds at Tiff have announced a traveling David Cronenberg exhibit launching in fall 2013. The festivities will take place at Tiff Bell Lightbox and include a "newly commissioned augmented reality game and a dedicated film programme." Um, yes. The tour kicks off in summer of 2014. Hopefully our heads don't explode Scanners-style with anticipation.   The exhibition is an effort to preserve the director's papers, objects, and film catalogue, presenting artifacts, props, documentation, audio-visual interviews, reconstructed set-pieces from his films, helping to trace the roots of his filmography. Tiff is promising a...

Robert Pattinson Stops Magazine From Publishing His 'Naked Nipple Licking' Pictures

15 May 2012 9:13 PM, PDT | Celebrity Mania | See recent Celebrity Mania news »

Though Robert Pattinson is no stranger in doing on-screen sex for his movies, the actor reportedly freaked out after having a very steamy photo shoot for French Premiere magazine. Rumor has it, the British heartthrob had asked the magazine to ban his "naked nipple licking" photos from being published.

An insider told RadarOnline, "Toward the end of the shot the photographer instructed the model to lick Rob's nipples!" The source added, "That was the kiss of death, Rob called cut and went in his dressing room and made a phone call. But, he did come back a few minutes later to finish off the photo session, so everyone thought it was all good."

After doing the intense shot, however, Rob seemingly worried that those images would be spread. The source stated that a few days after the racy photo session, the magazine received a phone call from Rob's camp, who »

Icons Exclusive Interview: Director Darren Lynn Bousman

11 May 2012 9:46 PM, PDT | iconsoffright.com | See recent Icons of Fright news »

*Editor’s note: This interview originally appeared on Icons Of Fright’s sister site Massive Hysteria back in September of 2010. With this week’s DVD/Blu-Ray releases of both Mother’S Day and 11-11-11, we thought we’d present it again to the Icons audience completely unedited and uncut. Check it!

Considering director Darren Lynn Bousman’s impressive body of work, which spans over 3 Saw sequels, the crazy rock musical Repo! The Genetic Opera, an episode of NBC’s short lived Fear Itself TV series and the upcoming remake of Mother’S Day, it’s a surprise that we never got him in the hot seat for an extensive Icons Of Fright interview. So, with the launch of Massive Hysteria, we decided that he would make for the ideal interviewee to kick things off in style!

Photos: Robert Pattinson Recreates David Cronenberg's Videodrome, Dead Ringers and Scanners

10 May 2012 6:46 PM, PDT | WorstPreviews.com | See recent Worst Previews news »

Robert Pattinson is desperate to shed his "Twilight" image and become a serious actor. He was given that chance by David Cronenberg (The Fly, Eastern Promises), when the director hired him to star in "Cosmopolis," which will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival this month. The role is in the film is very edgy, but Pattinson wanted to be a little more daring. He agreed to take part in a thirteen-hour photo shoot for Premiere France as long as he can pay homage to some of Cronenberg's earlier films, like "Videodrome," "Scanners," and "Dead Ringers." Apparently after receiving a look at what the magazine had in mind, Pattinson "was sorry that they weren't more daring, the complete opposite of what someone in his position would have asked," said the magazine, which had to start from scratch and create something "strange for his kind of shoot (a special effects makeup artist, »

R.Pattz Gets Cronenbergian For Freaky Photo Shoot

10 May 2012 5:13 PM, PDT | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

Okay, can we start campaigning for Robert Pattinson to star in remakes of every single David Cronenberg movie ever made?

It seems like everyone involved in "Cosmopolis" is claiming it's a return to weirdo form for Cronenberg, who has recently played it relatively safe with mannered character dramas like "A Dangerous Method" and "Eastern Promises." This latest promotional photo shoot (conceived by R.Pattz himself) seems to push that point even further as it features Cronenberg's latest leading man recreating scenes from a handful of the director's cult favorites, including "Dead Ringers," "Videodrome" and "Scanners."

We must say, Pattinson has earned a whole new level of street cred by appearing in pics with a gaping wound on his chest and a crazy James Woods kind of look on his face. A shame there wasn't any attempt at recreating "The Fly," though — R.Pattz in gross-out mutant makeup (and perhaps even »

Robert Pattinson Worships the New Flesh

10 May 2012 3:02 PM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

David Cronenberg's latest, Cosmopolis, looks to be a return to his older, outre cinematic style. It stars Robert Pattinson, who is working hard at shedding Edward Cullen by undertaking a completely different vapid persona. Check out some nifty promotional pics that feature the actor riffing on a few of the director's past works.

The French version of Premiere (as translated by Cosmopolis Movie - the dedicated fansite for the film) indicates it was Pattinson's idea to pay homage to such Cronenbergian classics as Videodrome, Scanners and Dead Ringers. We've got some of these below, but be sure to head on over to Cosmopolis Movie for more.

Beyond that, you can also dig on the film's theatrical poster and trailer below. Cosmopolis is due to hit at some point in 2012 and is based on Don DeLillo's novel about a young billionaire's bizarre odyssey across NYC and his encounters with several unsavory characters. »

Robert Pattinson Gets Weird in David Cronenberg Inspired Photos

10 May 2012 2:03 PM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

For years I've been quite the proponent of Robert Pattinson's acting career outside of The Twilight Saga, and mark my words, when all is said and done, we'll have a solid young actor on our hands, and even the teen girls won't like the movies he's going to start making. That's how it looks with David Cronenberg's stylish thriller Cosmopolis and forthcoming flicks like Mission: Blacklist. Keeping up with his artistic roots and darker Cronenberg style interests, Pattinson recently did a strange photoshoot for Premiere in France (via Movies.com) paying tribute to earlier films like Videodrome, Scanners and Dead Ringers. Look! Here are some of the photos from Premiere's spead and you can see the rest at Cosmopolisfilm.com: In a rough translation from the magazine, Premiere says Pattinson was very hands-on with the 13-hour photoshoot and even though these photos being so strange and twisted are »

Robert Pattinson Does Videodrome (And Other Cronenberg Films)

10 May 2012 8:52 AM, PDT | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

The Twilight saga's Robert Pattinson is starring in the new David Cronenberg film Cosmopolis and, in a new Premiere photo spread (from France), the actor "starred" recreated a few moments from Cronenberg's oeuvre, including Videodrome, Scanners and Dead Ringers.

From Premiere France:  "To say that he got involved in the making of the photoshoot is an euphemism. The first images of Scanners and Videodrome we prepared for him as an inspiration for the future snapshots came back to us with an unexpected commentary: Rob was sorry that they weren’t more daring, wanting to push all the limits with this shoot – the complete opposite of what someone in his position would have asked. Two days later, the photograph Eliot Lee Hazel and his crew – sort of strange for this kind of shoot (a special effect makeup artist, a pregnant lady …) – met in a gloomy hotel in downtown L.A. to »

Robert Pattinson Freaks Us Out With David Cronenberg Homage, Talk Of “Balls”

10 May 2012 7:48 AM, PDT | TheFabLife - Movies | See recent TheFabLife - Movies news »

According to translations of the French Premiere magazine, it was Robert Pattinson’s idea to do a photo shoot re-creating scenes from David Cronenberg’s films to honor his Cosmopolis director. And by “honor,” we mean remind us how truly freaky films like Videodrome (which inspired the photo above) are, and how freaky Cosmopolis promises to be. The accompanying article includes this prize RPattz quote (via Us Weekly): “Filming Cosmopolis with David changed something in me. … It gave me balls.”

Pattinson also talked to the mag about how he’s changed since filming the first Twilight. “Yes. I’m really different from who I was at the beginning of the saga. I got older. … When I’m going in the makeup trailer, I can see all these wrinkles that appeared since then. It’s really frightening. I got fatter as well. David Cronenberg Marathon: ‘Scanners’ much more than exploding heads

Scanners

Directed by David Cronenberg

Written by David Cronenberg

1981, Canada

In the early stages of Cronenberg’s career, he established himself as a prolific director of horror films by splicing his features with science fiction elements.  His efforts in creating a new sub-genre went unnoticed until his seventh film, Scanners.

At the time of its release, Scanners did not receive a lot of critical acclaim, but became successful enough for Cronenberg to break into Hollywood.  For film fans, its classic yet graphic scenes are now part of 1980′s cinema that saw him with fellow director Paul Verhoeven define the era with their now-cult films (Robocop, Total Recall, The Fly).

Scanners follows Cameron Vale (Stephen Lack), who is mysteriously captured by defence and weapon company ConSec.  Unbeknowst to him, he is a Scanner: an individual who has unexplained telepathic powers – and he is not the only one in the world.  He »

Another New Trailer for David Cronenberg's 'Cosmopolis'

20 April 2012 8:54 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

In a late March interview with News.com.au, writer/director David Cronenberg talked about his latest film Cosmopolis saying, "I don't think anyone will be able to say they have seen a movie like that before - from anybody. Never mind me." For anyone that has seen a Cronenberg film those are words likely to get you quite excited. We typically know what to expect from the director of The Fly, Scanners and Videodrome (to name only a few), but to contemplate the chance of seeing something like nothing we've ever seen before is always exciting and to know it is coming from Cronenberg is simply a multiplier. With that said, following the film's recent selection at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, I have a second international trailer for the film I just received along with a gallery of images from the pic. Set to hit theaters on May 23 in France, »

Another New International 'Cosmopolis' Trailer with Robert Pattinson

Finally the first film about our new millennium. Just before being announced as an In Competition entry at Cannes 2012 this morning, the first full-length trailer for David Cronenberg's Cosmopolis hit, sending cinephiles into a tizzy over its seductive debauchery and dark Cronenberg vibe. Out of nowhere, Twitch has followed up with an entirely different full-length Cosmopolis trailer that highlights many of its fantastic cast members. We already know Robert Pattinson stars as the billionaire who takes his limo around New York, but Samantha Morton is in it this time, so is Kevin Durand and even Paul Giamatti. See below! Another Cool Robert Pattinson/Cosmopolis Trailer

Robert Pattinson as Eric Packer, Cosmopolis Robert Pattinson's multibillionaire Eric Packer doesn't go on and on about wanting a haircut in this new Cosmopolis trailer — yes, another new Cosmopolis trailer. (Please scroll down.) This a more philosophical trailer, with cosmic statements such as "I smell sex all over you." Pattinson's reaction to that is priceless. And are they watching snuff films (minus the sex) at one point? [Check out another Cosmopolis trailer.] Now, this latest Cosmopolis trailer also offers a better look at the various supporting actors in the film. The English Patient / Hidden's Juliette Binoche looks particularly impressive. Cronenberg co-wrote the Cosmopolis screenplay with Don DeLillo, the author of the novel on which the film is based. In addition to Pattinson and Binoche, Cosmopolis features A Dangerous Method's Sarah Gadon, Sideways / Cinderella Man's Paul Giamatti, Sweet and Lowdown / In America's Samantha Morton, Resident Evil: Retribution / I Am Number Four's Kevin Durand, »

Awesome Cosmopolis Trailer: Robert Pattinson/David Cronenberg

18 April 2012 11:53 PM, PDT | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

Robert Pattinson in Cosmopolis "I wanna a haircut," says Robert Pattinson's multibillionaire Eric Packer — sounding like a petulant, spoiled brat with too much power and all-too-mundane needs — at the beginning of the newly released Cosmopolis trailer. (Please scroll down.) But mere human power has its limits. What will Packer become when there's "no more money" and "no more sex" and "no more power"? What would any of us become, especially if we can't get the haircut we want? [Check out another Cosmopolis trailer.] As expected, considering that this is a David Cronenberg movie, the Cosmopolis trailer looks great, Pattinson looks and sounds flawless in the role of the billionaire whose universe is about to be radically rearranged, and the (audible) dialogue sounds as weird as what one gets to hear in real life, e.g., "The logical extension of business is murder" or, again, "I wanna a haircut."
