Professor Nugent's face is bandaged in the opening sequence, and the rest of the movie is a flashback to how his face became mutilated. In the beginning scenes, his face is bandaged so that the entire upper half of his face looks normal. However, when we see the actual incident where his face gets burned, his entire face is burned to the point of causing death by trauma and dehydration. See more
One thing I do know is that there isn't any Bigfoot in these woods, here or anywhere else. It's just another version of the Loch Ness Monster. Still, you can't really blame people for making things up if it makes their own lives seem more interesting...
