The film was made and released about a year after the novel of the same name by Beth Roberts had been first published in 1979.
First feature film produced by the Tasmanian Film Corporation. The movie is one of only two pictures made by the former Australian state film body with the other being Save the Lady (1981).
The film is set in 1830 right in the middle of "The Black War" which was a conflict that occurred during 1828-1832 between British Colonists and Tasmanian Aborigines in Australia's island state of Tasmania then known as Van Diemen's Land.
