People thought Shashi Kapoor had gone crazy when he signed Shyam Benegal. People told him Shyam was to be admired, not hired!. Shashi saw Ankur and loved it. He then met Shyam and realized they had the same views on cinema. That is when Shashi signed Shyam.
Benegal was keen to cast Shabana as the lead heroine - a modern take on the iconic Draupadi. However Shashi had stopped acting opposite Shabana after rumors of their affair had led to a suicide attempt by his wife Jennifer. He recommended Rekha instead. The Amitabh-Rekha jodi had split up around the same time. Rekha who was keen to continue her foray into meaningful cinema after the success of Khubsoorat, grabbed the offer.
