Fatboy Slim Live From The Big Beach Boutique, Nationwide

Fatboy Slim's Big Beach Bootique, an all-the-trimmings shindig with lasers and pyrotechnics to make a Muse fan weep, is a bit of a fixture in the DJ's hometown of Brighton. In 2002, 250,000 people crammed on to Brighton beach to hear Cook play for free when organisers expected only 60,000.This year's outing was staged at Brighton & Hove Albion Fc's Amex stadium, where a 600 square metre Led video wall stretched the length of the pitch. The gig was filmed and will be shown for one night only at eight Picturehouse screens across the UK, as well as at cinemas worldwide. A bit of an intimate affair compared to Fatboy's Olympics closing ceremony appearance, but still. Come along in fancy dress and you might win a prize. But please: no whistles.

‘Herbie Goes Bananas’ has a Bad Reputation

Herbie Goes Bananas

Written by Don Tait, based on the novel Car, Boy, Girl by Gordon Buford

Directed By Vincent McEveety

USA, 1980, imdb

Listen to our Mousterpiece Cinema Herbie Goes Bananas podcast or read Josh‘s extended thoughts about the film.

*****

Some films acquire a bad reputation that sticks like a bad smell, driving potential viewers away before they ever see it. Everyone knows that Alien³ and Alien Resurrection are terrible even especially those who have never seen the film. This fate happens particularly to notorious bombs – especially to films that (temporarily) kill off franchises. There is a perverse feedback loop in place, the film bombed because no one went to see it, and since the film bombed it must be terrible, so no one wants to watch it.

But this is confusing quality with popularity. They can be linked, but films bombing may result from any number of factors »

Extended Thoughts on ‘Herbie: Fully Loaded’

Herbie: Fully Loaded

Directed by Angela Robinson

Written by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar & Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant

Starring Lindsay Lohan, Michael Keaton, Justin Long, Matt Dillon

Somehow, I have survived the world of Herbie, the Love Bug. This gauntlet has been trying, but I’ve grown as a person by making it through. Unfortunately, the movies that this magical Volkswagen is the star of haven’t really grown. Even as we reach the finale of the series (at least in terms of those movies that were released in theaters), Herbie is strictly sticking with the formula, racing a few times, changing the lives of the people who drive him, and getting into a few scrapes along the way. While the series has many dedicated fans, including my esteemed co-host Michael, I think one of the reasons why the series isn’t as thoroughly beloved as other »

Extended Thoughts on ‘Herbie Goes Bananas’

Herbie Goes Bananas

Directed by Vincent McEveety

Written by Gordon Buford and Don Tait

USA, 1980

I cannot believe that a movie as wrongheaded and idiotic as Herbie Goes Bananas exists. Herbie Goes Bananas is so bad, it makes Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo look like the combined 1940s output of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger (better known as The Archers), from The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp to The Small Back Room. In fact, I’m insulting The Archers’ films by even including them in the same sentence as anything pertaining to Herbie Goes Bananas. I could, frankly, spend this entire column cataloguing the many things in the world that are more enjoyable, funny, exciting, and lively than Herbie Goes Bananas. But while it’d be fun…well, I’m not sure how to finish that sentence. Let’s just assume the alternate-universe column where I tell you exactly »

Mousterpiece Cinema, Episode 47: ‘Herbie Goes Bananas’

26 May 2012 2:00 AM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Listeners, it’s finally come to this. After four films starring the rascally Love Bug himself, Herbie, your hosts Josh and Michael have begun to question each other’s sanity. The real culprit is the topic of this week’s podcast, the 1980 film Herbie Goes Bananas, where the supposedly lovable Vw Beetle faces off against scheming thieves, an outrageously horny older woman, a stuffy cruise-ship captain, and a fuming bull. (Absolutely none of that is a lie or a joke. We promise.) For anyone hoping that Michael would, for once, succumb to the Dark Side, you may be disappointed, but you’ll get to hear Josh rage and rant like never before. This one’s an episode for the pantheon, so check out the new Mousterpiece Cinema today!
