HAUNTED TALES is an interesting little horror anthology from the Shaw Brothers Studios in Hong Kong. It's essentially two films in one: one a gorgeously photographed and highly atmospheric film by Chor Yuen (INTIMATE CONFESSIONS OF A Chinese COURTESAN, HOUSE OF 72 TENANTS, CLAN OF AMAZONS and many others), the other a sleazy exploitation flick by Mou Tun Fei (aka T.F. Mous), the future director of such relentlessly grim films as LOST SOULS and MEN BEHIND THE SUN.

The first story involves a newly wed woman (played by Taiwanese actress Ching Li), who moves into her dream house with her husband but soon starts noticing some strange goings on which could have something to do with the supernatural. The second story involves a pathetic loser (frequent Shaw Brothers villain actor Chan Shen) who wins the lottery using what is essentially a Chinese Ouija board. He only becomes nastier, leading to his downfall.

The two films are quite different and are really like ying and yang to each other. One's a lush, beautifully photographed horror flick that plays out in a fairly subtle fashion and brings to mind the films of Mario Bava and many of the more lush Japanese horror films in terms of style. On the other hand, T.F. Mous' segment is a sleazy, class-free effort that resembles a low budget Japanese pinku film and as with LOST SOULS, features lots of uncomfortably exploitative camera angles and an insanely energetic vibe. The two films make a highly interesting double dosage of Chinese-style horror.
