Long from being among his finest work, this cold-war Szabo melodrama is, nevertheless, very recommendable to those who like the genre. It stars the great German actress Hannelore Elsner (of Heimat 2), and features fine performances by its three leads, interesting Central European locales, and beautiful music by Frederic Chopin and Peter Thomas. It has been available on sell-through video (PAL, German language only), distributed by Polygram Video of Hamburg, and sold I assume by Amazon.de. This is how I came across it. Hannelore Elsner and Istvan Szabo both attracted me to it. They never are in a bad project, so rest assured it's a well-made film. It is not however in the same league as MEPHISTO, HANUSSEN, or the wonderful recently released SUNSHINE. Worthwhile anyway for a certain public.
