This movie is in one the top 5 movies of Amitabh Bachchan.Vijay Varma (Amitabh Bachchan), an inspector of the Criminal Investigation Department, Mumbai and Ravi (Shatrughan Sinha), a brilliant criminal lawyer are childhood friends but their friendship fall prey to the evil machinations of Daga. Daga's smuggling operations has been busted time and again by Vijay and in one such raid he apprehends Daga's lieutenant Balwant. Daga hires Ravi to get Balwant acquitted. When Daga learns that Vijay and Ravi are in love with the same girl, Sheetal (Zeenat Aman), he causes a rift between the two friends making Ravi believe that Vijay has double-crossed him. With Ravi now Vijay's sworn enemy, Daga deviously frames Vijay for causing death of a criminal in his custody. Sheetal requests Ravi to defend Vijay but the latter demands a price - Sheetal herself! The stage is thus set with the odds heavily against Inspector Vijay. Does Sheetal fulfill Ravi's condition? Does Ravi get wise to Daga's plan? Can Vijay get out of this trap? Dostana provides a suspenseful and breathtakingly thrilling answer.
