Quick Take: Gore Vidal on Film

26 July 2017 12:00 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Variety recently announced that Kevin Spacey is to bring Gore Vidal to our screens in a Netflix original film. Directed by Michael Hoffman (dir. The Last Station), Spacey might be the most perfect casting, and judging by some coded, jovial remarks at the Tony Awards this year, may relish a role like this.

Vidal's life has previously been on screen in documentaries: Gore Vidal: United States of Amnesia and Best of Enemies, about his combative relationship with William F. Buckley.

Vidal: Writer, bon vivant, public intellectual and unapologetic homosexual has a rich, albeit chequered history in cinema. Screenwriter for the frenzied Suddenly, Last Summer, debauched bloodbath Caligula and his own notorious novel Myra Breckinridge was adapted into X-rated 1970 film.

And as uncredited writer of Ben-Hur, he was responsible for those lingering glances between Stephen Boyd and Charlton Heston - not that Heston ever knew that »

Malcolm McDowell stars in American Satan: trailer

Tony Sokol Jul 14, 2017

Cast your all-seeing eye on the upcoming metal musick movie American Satan.

The Illuminati, where would pop music be without it? Ever since legendary blues sacrifice Robert Johnson sold his soul to the devil for better chops on those Crossroads, rock and roll has had a hellhound on its tale. The Beatles may have been taller than pretty much anything, or they may have been invented at the Tavistock Institute for wayward lyricists, but Jay Z, Madonna, Rihanna and former Christian singer Katy Perry tease the same in-jokes to this day. The new American Satan trailer is here to set the record straight, and the humble narrator of A Clockwork Orange is hungry for new talent.

American Satan stars Malcolm McDowell (Caligula, Time After Time, Cat People, O Lucky Man!), BooBoo Stewart (X-Men: Days of Future Past), Mark Boone Jr. (Sons of Anarchy), Andy Biersack (Black Veiled »

Jared Leto's reported sci-fi anthology project with Jerrick Media has roped him into a lawsuit Penthouse is filing to protect the intellectual property of its late founder, Bob Guccione.

The adult magazine says Leto and his reported business partners are knowingly using trademarks without permission. Penthouse Global Media is suing Jerrick Media; its principals, Jeremy Frommer and Rick Schwartz; and Leto for copyright infringement, trademark infringement, unfair competition and false advertising, among other claims. (The complaint is posted in full below.)

In the late 1970s, Guccione produced Caligula, which the suit calls "a cult classic that blends ancient Roman history with erotica »

American Gods Season 1 Episode 8 Review – ‘Come To Jesus’

19 June 2017 12:25 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Martin Carr reviews the season one finale of American Gods

Intricate metaphors weave like finest thread between the interlinking strands of this season finale. Visual spectacle is in no short supply and theatrical trickery stands side by side with televisual flare, making ‘Come To Jesus’ something unique. Because instead of supplying pay off for the time invested Gods goes the other way, heaping invention upon invention, using irony and biblical debate like confetti whilst admonishing us for our lack of faith.

Musical accompaniment shapes our experience here more than at any other time. Tenor sax trickles over intricate visuals as spiders weave their way between strands of cloth. An ornately decorated sewing machine taps away while a finely manicured hand guides the process, popping in and out of close up, before inviting us into their confidence. So begins this Tinto Brass, ‘Caligula’ inspired piece of writhing Egyptian homage. All timpani drums and apposing clarinets, »

Penthouse Founder Bob Guccione’s Life Being Turned Into TV Series (Exclusive)

4 April 2017 5:00 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Penthouse founder Bob Guccione’s rise to the top of the media landscape and fall into financial ruin will be the subject of a new television series, Variety has learned.

Jerrick Media and Maven Pictures are teaming up on the project and are currently interviewing writers. The filmmakers say they are interested in providing a deeper understanding of Guccione, who they maintain was much more than just a pornographer.

Bob Guccione was more of an intellectual,” said Rick Schwartz, co-founder of Jerrick. “He was a complicated guy.”

Schwartz says that Guccione’s Upper East Side mansion wasn’t a Big Apple equivalent of the Playboy mansion. Instead of hedonistic parties, Guccione would host salons with the likes of astronomer and author Carl Sagan or attorney Alan Dershowitz. In addition to producing Penthouse, Guccione invested in cold fusion, backed a science and science-fiction magazine entitled Omni, and released “Caligula,” a notorious epic that blended erotica, history »

Feature: Taboo-Busting Horror

17 February 2017 10:01 AM, PST | Blogomatic3000 | See recent Blogomatic3000 news »

What are “Taboo Busters”? These are the films that dared go where no-one had gone before… Joining the ranks of great cinematic taboo busters is We Are the Flesh – the debut film from director Emiliano Rocha Minter – an extraordinary and unsettling film experience about a young brother and sister roaming an apocalyptic city, who take refuge in the dilapidated lair of a strange hermit, who takes them on a sexually-charged, nightmarish journey into an other-worldy dimension.

The film, out now from Arrow Video, is certainly not for the prudish or faint-hearted, featuring explicit sex and grotesque set pieces, building to a finale of demonically depraved proportions, making We Are the Flesh extreme art cinema at its boldest and most taboo-bustingly bizarre. Here are six more films, also released by Arrow Video, that pushed the boundaries of cinema as never before.
