Best CGI Movies: Top 10 Sony Imageworks Visual Effects Movies Ranked

Best CGI Movies: Top 10 Sony Imageworks Visual Effects Movies Ranked
Sony Pictures Imageworks, celebrating its 25th anniversary, is unique in Hollywood as the only studio-run visual effects and animation division. Formed in 1992 (now headquartered in Vancouver), Imageworks alternates between live-action/CG hybrids and animation with its younger sister, Sony Pictures Animation, which was founded in 2002.

Imageworks has won two Oscars (“Spider-Man 2” VFX and “The ChubbChubbs!” animated short) along with an Academy Sci-Tech award this year for an advanced shading program. But Imageworks first cut its teeth on “Speed,” “James and the Giant Peach,” “Jumanji,” “Starship Troopers,” and “Contact” before tackling “Stuart Little” in 1999, the first-cg-animated character to star in a live-action feature.

Since then, Imageworks spear-headed performance capture-based virtual production with director Robert Zemeckis (“Polar Express,” “Monster House”), and has continued to work on franchises including “Spider-Man” (“Homecoming” opens this week), “The Smurfs,” and “Hotel Transylvania.”

Here’s our ranking of the 10 best VFX moments from Imageworks:

Playback: Ben Foster on ‘Hell or High Water’ and Being a ‘Builder’ as an Actor
Welcome to “Playback,” a Variety podcast.

On this week’s show, Variety Chief Film Critic Peter Debruge is back to discuss the upcoming critics awards circuit. Films like “Manchester by the Sea” and “Moonlight” are expected to do well, but what other corners of the season could these groups illuminate? Additionally, with “Silence” having finally screened, we discuss Martin Scorsese’s spiritual epic. Could it unseat the perceived Oscar frontrunner “La La Land” or is it arriving too late to fully connect?

Later on I’m talking to “Hell or High Water” star Ben Foster, who also turns up in three other films this year: “Finest Hours,” “Warcraft” and “Inferno.” He’s picked up a pair of supporting nominations this year from the Film Independent Spirit Awards and the Critics’ Choice Awards, and could be in line to join co-star Jeff Bridges at the Oscars.

For more, listen to the latest episode of “Playback” below.

‘The Ivory Game,’ Produced By Leonardo DiCaprio, Is a Shocking Look at an Underground Marketplace — Telluride Review

‘The Ivory Game,’ Produced By Leonardo DiCaprio, Is a Shocking Look at an Underground Marketplace — Telluride Review
The numbers don’t tell the story, but they’re alarming enough to set it in motion: 150,000 elephants have been killed for ivory in five years; today, one elephant is killed every 15 minutes. At this rate, the African Elephant will go extinct in 15 years. These figures provide a statistical foundation to “The Ivory Game,” a globe-spanning investigative look at a species under serious duress. However, the movie’s real suspense emerges out of the astonishing footage — from the heated battleground of Southern Africa, where elephants face constant threat from poachers, to the black market in China where the goods wind up, “The Ivory Game” reveals the full scope of a human-driven push toward mass extinction. A real-life ecological thriller in the mold of “The Cove” and “Virunga,” directors Kief Davidson and Richard Ladkani’s engaging overview makes up for its occasionally scattershot approach with first-rate suspense.

Chelsea Transfers: 10 Possible January Deals

Michael Probst/AP

Flying high at the top of the Premier League and set to embark on another foray in the knockout stages of the Champions League, Chelsea and Jose Mourinho are enjoying a near-perfect start to the 2014-15 season.

The Blues are four points clear of second-place Southampton and eight ahead of their nearest predicted rivals come the end of May, Manchester City. Taking a single point from either of their final two Group G matches against Schalke and Sporting Lisbon will guarantee them a route to the Champions League Round of 16.

Such dominance in this early part of the campaign has led to speculation whether the Special One can lead the club to an undefeated Premier League triumph – the first since Arsenal’s ‘Invincibles’ side of 2003-04. That’s a big call to make barely a third of the way into the campaign, but are Chelsea really capable
