Nashville Shakeup: Two Series Regulars Exit Ahead of Move to Cmt

22 June 2016 7:30 PM, PDT | TVLine.com | See recent TVLine.com news »

To use a phrase popular with one of Nashville‘s main characters, it’s wheels up for Luke and Layla when the country-music drama returns for a fifth season. Series regulars Will Chase and Aubrey Peeples will not be with the show when it makes its Cmt debut, TVLine has learned exclusively.

Chase’s Luke had little to do after his engagement with Rayna fizzled in Season 3; most of his Season 4 storyline involved sticking up for Wheelin’ Dealin’ Records artist Will Lexington when he was attacked by a homophobic talk-show host.

On this day in pop culture history: Pixar’s ‘Cars’ opened in theaters

9 June 2016 9:00 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

It’s been 10 years since audiences first got to see Mater and Lightning McQueen on the big screen. Pixar’s Cars opened in theaters on June 9, 2006, following its world premiere at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Concord, Nc. The seventh feature from the Emeryville, CA-based animation studio, it returned John Lasseter to the director’s chair. Cars failed to reach the box office grosses of the three other Pixar movies released before it in the new millennium — Monsters, Inc., Finding Nemo and The Incredibles — but, unsurprisingly, merchandise sales were huge for this one. A sequel was released in 2011, and Cars 3 is set for a June 2017 release. Other notable June 9 happenings in pop culture history: • 1950: British noir film Night and the City had its U.S. premiere. • 1963: Barbra Streisand appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show for the third time. • 1984: Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time” hit the top of the Billboard singles chart. »

TV Series Venture Into Fourth Dimension for 2016-17 Season

9 June 2016 8:00 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Television is hooked on time travel. At this spring’s TV upfronts, every major network except CBS announced that it will air a show that involves time travel during the 2016-17 television season.

NBC will debut “Timeless,” a drama about a group of people who go back in time to alter history by stopping the Hindenburg disaster. Fox has set a midseason premiere for the time-travel comedy “Making History,” executive produced by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, co-starring Adam Pally and Leighton Meester.

ABC will air “Time After Time,” the television adaptation of a book that speculates over what would have happened had H.G. Wells — who is widely credited for popularizing the idea of time travel with his 1895 novel “The Time Machine” — actually had the ability to travel through time. And The CW has “Frequency,” an adaptation of the 2000 thriller about a father and son communicating across time with this use of a ham radio, »

L.A. Screenings: Foreign Buyers Say What Worked, What Didn’t

3 June 2016 2:22 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

In recent years, international buyers at the L.A. Screenings have complained that Hollywood studios haven’t been producing the type of shows, such as procedurals and light comedies, that work best on free-to-air, generalist channels abroad. At this year’s event, there were signs the studios tried to remedy that, but their offerings still met with a mixed response. “I thought the standard was pretty high,” says one, while another laments that “Hollywood seems to be a little lacking in fresh ideas.” Variety speaks to several European buyers about what worked for them and what didn’t.

Sarah Wright, director of acquisitions at European pay-tv service Sky

“It was a pretty good year,” says Wright, who watched about 60 shows at the L.A. Screenings. The heavy demand for dramas has produced a bumper crop of scripted shows in the U.S., which is “really good news for the international buyers. »

Networks Mostly Playing It Safe With Fall Lineups (Analysis)

20 May 2016 4:19 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

The networks are open to new dramas on Friday, making comedy a bigger priority and holding back more ammo for midseason. These — and an overall streak of conservatism — are among the big takeaways from the network schedule announcements from this week.

Is comedy ready for a comeback? While drama gets most of the attention during the era of Peak TV, some of the broadcasters’ top young-adult ratings continue to be generated by half-hour comedies, which also repeat better.

Comedy leaders CBS and ABC both came to the realization that laughter is the best medicine for their early-week schedule needs, opting for four-comedy lineups on Monday and Tuesday, respectively. NBC, meanwhile, took another step closer to coming out of its comedy cocoon by shifting its lone hour of fall comedy from Friday to the higher-profile Thursday.

Overall there are 24 half-hours slots devoted to comedy on the five most-watched nights of the »
