Bette Davis was offered the role of Miss Froy. Davis told biographer and friend Whitney Stine ("I'd Love to Kiss You ... Conversations with Bette Davis"), "I loved Dame May Whitty in the original, but I don't think the part is quite right for me. She should be a plump, sweet old lady." The part went to Angela Lansbury, who had co-starred with Davis in Death on the Nile (1978).
