Being branded a coward for abandoning his ship full of over 300 passengers. Captain Vijay Pal Singh, is discharged from duty, humiliated by society and disowned by his parents. Feeling guilty over his cowardice and with low self-esteem, he starts working as a coal miner to forget his past. But it still continues to hunt him, he welcome pain as a punishment. The owner of the mine is Dhanraj Puri, a carefree and irresponsible man whose mine is poorly equipped, with less than sufficient medical supplies, and no facilities for the miners and their families. Vijay trys to save every workers life in order to overcome his haunted past but to no avil. But one day water forced itself in one of the mining tunnels, endangering the lives of over 400 workers. Vijay along with some of his other colleagues put up a big fight to save each and every workers life. Which at last was successful and Vijay was able to overcome his troubled past. Written by

During the making of this film, its said that the makers were not satisfied with the music of the film and they wanted to replac composer rajesh roshan. (they had a hit toghether dosra admi) but lata mangeshkar warned the makers that if they replace rajesh roshan with another composer, she said she wont sing for the makers again. So here the makers dint have a choice they had to listen to lata. Salil chawdry composed the bachgroun music for the film. The makers just had doubts because the music was different and underplayed. Today the songs and music is classic till now people know ek raasta, bahome teri, dhoom mache dhom, mere jhoroko aye baraat etc. Rajesh Roshan wanted to compose for yash chopra other film Trishul, but yash told raju to compose for Kaala Patthar, it will be a challenge, yash chopra suggested to rajesh roshan.
