Scott's character gets into fisticuffs with the P.I. and an L.A. rap parlor bouncer hammerlocks him down a stairway onto the street. He also attacks the porn actor he found to have had sex with his daughter (some blood shown on the man's face) and slaps and raises his fist to Niki. A man and woman are stabbed in a "snuff" film that Scott watches. Scott beats up its performer's (Ratan) sidekick (Tod) to find info about Ratan. Ratan is shot by the P.I. who was following them from L.A. to 'Frisco.

Some of drinking and smoking, even in the opening scenes of Calvinist relatives smoking at a Christmas gathering. Niki smokes and drinks and the P.I. tells her that her pimp will get her strung out again by snorting, sniffing and shooting drugs for deserting him.

The girl's father is seen as repressive and brutal, similar to director/writer Schrader's real-life childhood family, as are all his associates. The seedy urban districts in California and references to Ratan's "dealing in pain", e.g. his "snuff" film are intense.
