"Such a waste of a man."
5 September 2010 | by (London, England) – See all my reviews

It's as easy to see what attracted Patrick McGoohan to the role of a hit-man who wants to give it all up only to find his employers won't let him as it is to see why 1979's rather uninvolvingly minimalist Irish neo-noir thriller The Hard Way doesn't work. Produced by John Boorman and photographed by Henri Decae and presumably intended for theatrical release before ending up on TV, you can still see the ambition, but the scars left by the troubled production that saw original director and co-writer Richard F. Tombleson replaced by the similarly obscure Michael Dryhurst after disagreements with the star are all too visible in a film that looks like the objective became simply to finish it to fulfil a different kind of contractual obligation. It's low-key to the point of inertia, its overfamiliar plot interspersed with theatrical scenes of Edna O'Brien's ex-wife talking to camera about its anti-hero in the kind of doomed past-tense Joycian prose that's constantly in danger of turning into unwitting self-parody. It's not until the second half when Lee Van Cleef's mercenary contractor tries to salvage his own reputation by taking his revenge on McGoohan that the film starts to come to life, but even here it's fairly predictable stuff, more or less decently staged but so determinedly low-key (with the exception of some misjudged dialogue and maniacal laughter in the finale set in a booby-trapped country house) that it keeps you at a constant distance. It's one of those films that's never terrible but never really good: it's just there, going through the motions with professional detachment. Still, at least McGoohan doesn't end up in a Welsh village this time…
