Michael Weller On Milos Forman, ‘Hair’ & Broadway’s ‘Doctor Zhivago': Conversations With Jeremy Gerard

29 December 2014 6:00 AM, PST | Deadline | See recent Deadline news »

Milos Forman was looking for the best writer to adapt the hippie anti-war musical Hair for the big screen. The Czech filmmaker already had a growing U.S. following in the wake of The Firemen’s Ball and Taking Off when 1975’s One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest took home five Oscars including best film and best director. And while Michael Weller had zero experience as a screenwriter, he did have a reputation for plays that cast a gimlet eye on the generation that came of age in the era of protest against the Vietnam War and for civil rights. His works included Moonchildren (1971), Loose Ends (1979) and Spoils Of War (1988), which interwove the intensely felt political and personal obsessions of Baby Boomers on the cusp of adulthood.

For Forman, Weller would write two of the most underrated films of their time, Hair (1979) and, two years later, Ragtime. Like his »

To The Manor Born

26 November 2014 4:56 AM, PST | www.culturecatch.com | See recent CultureCatch news »

Of all my friends, my mentor and dear friend Michael Butler has led one exceptional and interesting life. To the manor born is only part of his wonderful background. His stories are legendary and many a dinner party I will goad him into sharing some story about life on his farm in Oak Brook, Il or why he decided to produce Hair on Broadway or his glorious polo playing days or his friendship with politicians (The Kennedys) and movie stars (Rock Hudson, Tyrone Power) alike. He's the only individual to appear on Richard Nixon’s Enemies List... twice! Thankfully he's finally sharing his stories with the masses via his new podcast. These are perfect for consumption at any time of the day and worth sharing with your friends and family, too. Subscribe to Michael Butler's Memoirs on iTunes today.

To Date, Academy Has Had Only 3 Female Presidents; Today, Stronger Female Presence in Board of Governors

Women presidents at the Academy: Cheryl Boone Isaacs is only the third one (photo: Angelina Jolie, Cheryl Boone Isaacs, Brad Pitt) (See previous post: "Honorary Award Non-Winners: Too Late for Gloria Swanson, Rita Hayworth, Marlene Dietrich.") Wrapping up this four-part "Honorary Oscars Bypass Women" article, let it be noted that in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' 85-year history there have been only two women presidents: two-time Oscar-winning actress Bette Davis (for two months in 1941, before the Dangerous and Jezebel star was forced to resign) and screenwriter Fay Kanin (1979-1983), whose best-known screen credit is the 1958 Doris Day-Clark Gable comedy Teacher's Pet. Additionally, following some top-level restructuring in April 2011, the Academy created the positions of Chief Executive Officer and Chief Operating Officer, with the CEO post currently held by a woman, former Film Independent executive director and sometime actress Dawn Hudson. Theater Review: ‘Hair’ Still Shines at American Theater Company

3 June 2014 9:09 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – At intermission, I remarked to a fellow theater patron that the musical “Hair,” presented by the American Theater Company (Atc) of Chicago, still has a solid impact. His logical reply, “it’s hard to mess this one up.” The Atc does the classic hippie musical proud, with a raucous rendition.

Play Rating: 4.0/5.0

Hair” is an American musical theater icon, filled with songs that have become embedded into the DNA of the culture. “Aquarius,” “Hair,” “Easy to Be Hard.” “Good Morning Starshine” and “Let the Sunshine In” all became hits on their own, and when integrated into the “happening” – as Atc likened to call their production – elicits a gut-wrenching power. The energetic cast takes the time trip back to 1968 with no irony, and deliver their flower power with a bit of extra bloom, which made their version that much more impressive – even overcoming some pacing issues. “Hair” is a celebration and a cautionary tale, »

“Penny Dreadful” Not So Much “Dreadful” as “Completely Bananas”

15 May 2014 1:21 PM, PDT | The Backlot | See recent The Backlot news »

Perhaps apropos for the genre, Showtime has been sneaking out the first few episodes of its new sexy-time monster show Penny Dreadful under the cover of night: the premiere was posted on YouTube weeks before it aired this past Sunday, and the show’s second ep (“Seance”) – which airs this coming Sunday – is already available On Demand. Maybe Showtime is dipping a bloody toe into the bingewatching waters popularized by Netflix and Hulu’s all-at-once release model. Maybe they’re trying to minimize conflict with the already-packed Sunday night television lineup. Or maybe the people behind the show are as insane as the show itself.

In any case, the point I want to make is this: Penny Dreadful is nuttier than a fruitcake and twice as tasty.

Let’s tackle the first episode first (if you haven’t watched it yet and care to, it’s available in its entirety »
