Not enough of the good stuff
5 March 2007 | by (United Kingdom) – See all my reviews

I found this to be a just about acceptable offering. It begins with quite a nice fight and then plummets until near the hour mark. The big problem is the amount of broad comedy in the film. The plot itself is not especially comedic so there is no real reason for the often quite stupid tone. The main guy does seem to be good at acrobatics, and he does a lot of leaping, rolling and general movement, but until the end its all in the service of silliness. The bad guy is played awesomely by Casanova Wong, but is underused throughout the film. The choreography is OK, but there just isn't much actual fighting until the last half hour. The last half hour is however gnarly enough for me to give this a 5 rating, mainly on account of the fearsome and creative final fight, that is indeed reminiscent of the end of Once Upon A Time In China, but in a real cool old skool way. Despite this plus point, I still spent most of the movie kinda irritated so I guess its one more for kung fu die hards than anyone else.
