Tommy is an aged veteran of World War II who must sometimes pawn his medals between pension checks. He meets a young punk called Lennie when he violently stops the kid from robbing a Poppylady. Lennie and his gang mug Tommy later in revenge, but Lenny is wounded in the face when Tommy fights back before being beaten unconscious. They find themselves in the same hospital ward and Lennie overhears Tommy's nightmare of being wounded in the Dieppe Raid. Fleeing to avoid being identified when his victim regains consciousness, Lennie is plagued with regret for his action. He decide to try to make amends, but Tommy might not be the mood to listen.
