Parents Guide for
Superman (1978) More at IMDbPro »

The content of this page was created directly by users and has not been screened or verified by IMDb staff.
Since the beliefs that parents want to instill in their children can vary greatly, we ask that, instead of adding your personal opinions about what is right or wrong in a film, you use this feature to help parents make informed viewing decisions by describing the facts of relevant scenes in the title for each one of the different categories: Sex and Nudity, Violence and Gore, Profanity, Alcohol/Drugs/Smoking, and Frightening/Intense Scenes.

Sex & Nudity

Full frontal nudity of a child as he climbs out of a large hole.

Violence & Gore

Clark Kent and Lois Lane are threatened by a crook with a handgun. Lois unwisely resists and kicks the crook who discharges his weapon as he falls, but Clark , whose Kryptonian physiology in a yellow sun environment means he cannot be harmed by such a weapon, catches the bullet before it can strike Lois.

Superman tangles with a few villains, but it is in a comic book style. For instance, a man strikes Superman on the head with a crowbar, but he is of course completely unharmed while the attacker is painfully shaken by the vibrations of the metal weapon created by the blow. A man is killed by a subway train, but no gore is shown.

Profanity

Infrequent use of damn and hell.

Brief and infrequent.

In the opening scene, three villains are sentenced to the "Phantom Zone", and the way they are transferred to this other dimension is intense.

The scene where Krypton is destroyed may scare young kids.

A young Clark Kent races a train at superspeed and barely makes a crossing before the train reaches it. Although the typical audience would know that Clark is in no danger of getting hurt if he is struck, the impact against the superstrong and invulnerable Kryptonian could possibly have destroyed the locomotive and caused a massive derailment.

Lex Luthor kills a man with a subway train. We see his reactions and hear him scream as the train hits him, but no gore is shown.

A helicopter malfunctions, nearly killing its occupants in an extended sequence, but Superman flies to the rescue.

Thousands of people are put in peril by a nuclear missile that causes a massive earthquake that threatens to destroy the entire state of California, but Superman stops the disaster.

A woman is trapped inside her car during an earthquake, and she is suffocated by sand and mud.
